Hello everyone, for those that don't know me or my husband our names are Scott and Heather and will be picking up our new baby Isabell in about 5 weeks. We live in Upstate NY (Fort Drum) about 20 min from Canada and well our winter is coming fast. So I was wondering what kind of exercise do you guys recomend for a pup that is going to be little in the winter months without freezing to death. Now I don't mind going out in the cold and going on walks and playing in the snow but what can a pup that age handle? We will be moving back home to Florida in Feb. So we will be ok once we get back where it's not going to be so cold. I can't wait to take her running on the beach. So any ideas would be great. Now just a thing to remember we get over 100 inches a snow every year. Lucky us huh?  Also do you think getting her a jacket would help at all? I can get the sweaters or fleece ones no problem. I am pretty lucky to have the sporting stores here by us. Got to love Gander Mountain. We are sure going to miss it when I move back south.

Thanks so much, Heather

Heather,

I just drove thru Fort Drum last weekend on my way to Batavia, NY for a flyball tournament. We are in Ottawa, ON about 2 hours north east of you so I can understand your weather situation. I think the really cold weather is still a few months away or at least I hope it is!

I would build up Isabell's cold tolerance gradually by taking her out for short walks/runs when it's below freezing. She'll let you know when she's cold.My dogs have jackets but only wear them occasionally and they don't seem too feel the cold as long as I'm there. Deep snow is great for them to run thru to tire themselves out! I would also recommend and indoor acticvity like puppy kindergarten. GSPs need mental stimulation as well to be happy and this will tire her out too.

Thanks for the reply that really helps. Last year we didn't get real snow until Dec and then it dumped 10 ft in 5 days in Jan. and never stopped. I am hoping that is how it is going to be this year but who really knows with mother nature. Isabell will be going to daycare and puppy training classes once she is 12 weeks old so that will be the end of dec /Jan. time frame.

When we brought Bo home it was early May and it was still cool and damp in the morning. Poor little guy would shake like a leaf going to pee and run back in when he was done. Walking in rain was a nightmare... Funny thing is, it's just as cool now in the morning and we have had many rainy walks since, and no shaking. My theory? At eight weeks he was just scared of everything around him ... cold doesn't seem to bother him a bit anymore...

They certainly have more cold tolerance than I ever thought possible. The one thing I would be careful of that no one's mentioned yet is her paws. Make sure they are clean and free of ice and salt when you come in from outside. And good luck with your new baby!
