At what age are GSP fully grown?
I have an 8 month old female that weighs 45 lbs what will she weigh when fully grown?
I told my wife that they dont get very large because the puppy stays in the house. Hope I dont get blasted if she turns out to be a lot larger. |

flabio -
TessaGA posted this in another post and it is pretty accurate (see below). Based on the below info and my own experience I would say shorthairs stop growing in height somewhere around 6 to 8 months. They are still putting on weight and muscle even up to 2 years. My girl, Halo, wasn't completely muscled out until she was about 1 year and 8 months. Her weight though didn't change after she was about 1 year.
TessaGAs post:
There are two formulas:
1. [weight at 4 months] x 2 + 10 = adult weight.
2. [weight at 6 months] = 75 % of adult weight.
These are formulas to estimate the potential size/weight, as used by shelters and rescue organizations. As Marie said, it depends on many other factors, not the least genetics. A pup should be close in size to its parents, but there are variations. Whether or not the pup was spayed/neutered may also have some effect on how it grows.
Length and height will stop at 1 year or so.
Tessa is 7.5 months now and weighs 42 lbs. She has only gained 2 lbs in the last 6 weeks, so considerably slowed down. I doubt though that she is "done" Her adult weight was estimated to be at the top range for a female, 55-60 lbs, by the breeder, but again, those are just estimates.
All that said, it amazes me how big these dogs seem even at 40 lbs. |

At eight months she's almost fully tall, which is the best judgment of how successful she will be at counter surfing. Sounds like you've got a bitch at the small end of the scale. Watch for her knobby ankles to smooth out, then she is done -- height wise. |

Very interesting formula.
Any idea what size a puppy will be using the weights at 7 weeks? I am considering 2 males...one is 8.02 lbs and the other is 11 lbs at 7 weeks.
The sire is 60 lbs and 22" and the dam is 50 lbs and 22".
Here are the pedigrees:

I was surprised to see such a large pup in the litter. I have never had a "big" GSP and I tend to like the males around 60 lbs. with these two boys I think they are on opposite ends with the small guy probably filling out around 50 - 55lbs and the big guy around 70 lbs.
Any thoughts?
Updated weights for the pups...9.00 lbs and 11.10 lbs (49 days)

| The parents are a good indicator of what the size of the pups will be at maturity. The one may be smaller than the other because of when they were born, competition for feeding, etc. My oldest girl was the runt of her litter, but is now 24.5 inches and weighs 57 pounds. My other female was smaller than one of her sisters, but now is taller and weighs more than her sister. My male was the biggest in the litter, but turned out to be smaller than one of his brothers. The common denominator though is that all my dogs are very close in size to their parents. Belle, my oldest, turned out to be about the size of her mother. Halo, my middle girl, I am told favors her dad, but a female version. My boy is probably going to be the same size as his dad. |

Your sire is 1" below the standard and a little heavy for his height.
You can fatten up a dog to meet a desired weight but you can't stretch them taller.
Take a look at the grandparents heights. Maybe it skipped a generation.
I think they will each be around 22"-23 and that is not tall enough to weight 70lbs.
Depending on the bone of the dogs they should weight around 50-55lbs.
You are brave to take on 2 puppies. Hope you have some mental stability stored in a draw to take out when you need it. Anywho, this board will e here to support and encourage you.
You will have to send pictures when you get them.

I thought that too but when I re-read the post I couldn't make out which it was. If that is the case doesn't the Hustler line produce a heavier boned, larger dog? Not that they are out of standard but larger then the 22" sire posted about. |

Maybe Brenda aka snips could comment since the sire of the litter is of her breeding. I know Rip aka Snips Ticked Off was a standard sized dog, 24" I think. A 22" male at 60 lbs sounds more like a Lab than a Shorthair!

1" doesn't bother me but it is 1" below the standard, which does bother me a little b/c he was bred to a bitch that is in the middle. Unless this sire is known for throwing standard size males I would not choose this litter if I was looking for a 60lb male, who would need to be around 24"-25" to not be overweight at 60lbs.Bone does make a bit of a difference in weight but a taller dog is more desireable then a heavy boned dog.Height and weight need to 'fit' each other.A 70lb dog would need to be near 26",give or take a 1/2", I don't see this size in this litter. |

Ok...I had to look up how to measure the withers and did it correctly this time.
Baron is 24" and as stated before he usually carries his weight around 60 lbs. Gretchen is 23" and varies over the past 2 years from 46 - 50 lbs.
I have a son from a previous litter of Baron's who is 25" and carries around 57 lbs. He is a very lean one with little waist and a deep chest.
The litter is mine and I am considering keeping one of the aformentioned pups in my previous post.
I intend on picking not only the dog that shows a good amount of inital prey drive (these dogs are bird dogs) but I also want the one that is going to fill out within the standard...not too big or not to small. I tend to like them on the leaner side because of the type of cover and birds I hunt (ruffed grouse - aspen cuts with a lot of slash). Therefore, with the boy that is 11.10 lbs at 7 weeks, I was concerned that he may fill out too big for that style of hunting.
On the other hand, the other boy with good initial prey drive is 9.00 lbs at 7 weeks and all legs. He looks more like an adult dog right now and I would be concerned that he may end up too small.
I would like one no more than 55 - 60 lbs and in the middle of the height range would be great.
Thanks for your continued comments. |

Here are pics of the litter at 6.5 weeks with the weights at that time:
Girl #1 - 9.00 lbs

Girl #2 - 7.04 lbs

Boy #1 - 8.08 lbs

Boy #2 - 10.08 lbs

Girl #3 - 9.10 lbs

Girl #4 - 7.12 lbs

Boy #3 - 9.04 lbs

The dogs I am considering are boys #1 and #2

Puppies are the cutest, aren't they? From your last post I think you should just pick any dog you like. All point to a standard size litter. Do the parents have hip x-rays? |
