Hello All,

I have been lurking here for several weeks and am so glad to have found you.  Folks here have had so many good ideas and lots of information on GSPs.

Having fallen in love with the breed about a year ago, we took the plunge and found a lovely secondhand GSP at the Humane Association in Wausau, WI.  This guy came in as a stray and we scooped him up after doing some internet searching for GSPs.  He is estimated to be about 6 years old.  He is the most wonderful dog our family could have asked for.  We have two sons, ages 10 and 7, and a cat, age 17.  Ranger gets along with all of us and is a total lover.  Very snuggly and calm in the house and appears to have been crate trained.  All we have to do is say "kennel up" while we're having supper and in he goes.  He loves the woods and seems to smell every living thing.

We are still shaking our heads at how we got so lucky as to find a GSP at an animal shelter and for a very low adoption fee. (Of course, that was just the beginning...the real costs come afterwards, don't they??!)

We got to meet Lisa, the "Mad GSP rescue" lady a couple weekends ago and are so happy to be a part of this group.  Had we not found Ranger, we probably would have gotten one of her rescue dogs.  A puppy seemed to be a bit much for us novices to handle as new dog owners.  We are happy to not have to do the housetraining bit!

As you can see from the photo, we are working on recall training, but hope to be able to do away with the pinch collar as soon as possible.

I am looking forward to corresponding with many of you as we go through this journey together.

Amy in Western WI

OK...Can anyone help me figure out how to attach my photo?? It won't seem to show when I hit preview....

Congrats on your beautiful new addition!

On the pictures: I've had horrible luck using html code to stick the pictures in. It seems to work better if I just hit the "insert/edit image" button in the toolbar above the message entry window and just paste the url for the image in there.

What a nice looking GSP. I am sure he is as thrilled to join your family as you are to have him. It's always nice to hear when dogs find their forever homes.

Hi Amy

Congrats!! on your new guy. I am pretty new here also and we too adopted a little boy from a local all breed rescue group, and since he wasn't neuter yet and we agreed to have our Vet neuter him we got him at puppy price of only 35.00. But your right the cost comes after.. Not only the Neuter and shots but he loves his treats and toys. haha Cody is around 20 months old and full of fun. We are enjoying watching him run and run and run some more.. Welcome to the group I got some good tips on here. Enjoy your boy. Here is a picture of our boy Cody. (if this works)

Wow--what a distinguished looking boy!  I love that intense look on his face.  Definitely a keeper!  You sure were lucky to find each other.

Best of luck with the new addition!

I am amazed at what beautiful dogs are ending up in shelters. If any of these had been mine I would have moved heaven and earth to find them. It is nice to know that they are finding great homes with you. It's a good thing I don't live close to Lisa (the amazing rescuer). I would have had to snap up that beautiful male she has. My husband is alergic to the dogs but loves ours.

Pointer Fan,

Yes, we have been having the same thought as you.  Why didn't someone come looking for this beautiful, sweet dog?  It makes us so sad, because it is obvious he must have had a good home - he loves to go for car rides, goes in his kennel willingly, is great with kids and other dogs (and the CAT), and is a big love always by my side.  If he were to go missing...like you, I would move heaven and earth to get him back!  And we've only known him 3 weeks!

My husband and I were just talking about how if older shelter dogs are this great I'd take 3 of them!  Ha Ha...Just Kidding Lisa at WGSP rescue!!  We thought Whilamina was a beaut and would have maybe taken Rocco if our Ranger wouldn't have worked out.

Amy

Pointer Fan, I also agree, Cody has turned out to be such a sweet boy. He likes to be near one of us when we are here, but sleeps great in his crate. Loves the grandkids, 4 and 20 months and great with our 2 Bostons and the granddog, Drake the yellow Lab. He is ours now and we love him.

Most vets and some other pet stores sell shampoo that helps people with dog allergies!! Just a note, Hint Hint

We tried Allergroom but it drove the dog nuts. As long as we keep the electronic filters clean he does ok with one dog. I must confess I am jealous when I see your pack gathered around. I was surprised that it did not bother him to be around our son's Newfie who sheds constantly. They are supposed to be hypo-allergenic. Still prefer wash and wear dogs even though the Newfie is cute.

p.s.

was surprised to see how much lighter Mocha was as a pup. Love her color now--really fits her name.

Is it the hair or the skin flakes? You can give the dog fish oil, or borage, flax seed oil and it will stop the flaky skin problem. Just a thought.

From what I gather it is the dander that causes alergies. I have to get over to Walmart to pick up the fish, flax & borage oil.
