Forwarding an eloquent plea from Bev, a volunteer with Southern California GSP Rescue and frequent foster mom. She and her husband Howard have been fostering Buddy, the dog who's the focus of our current fundraising work. Buddy's vet fees have SoCal rescue in the red, and every little bit helps. Please go to gsp-rescue.org and click on the link to Buddy's fundraiser--you can donate as little as $10 and it will be deeply appreciated! With times being tough for a lot of folks, our fundraisers are especially important right now. Thanks! Mia volunteer, GSP rescue Southern California and New England Dear Friends, Well, I am back again with outstretched hands. Our New Year Day was spent bringing a 10 month old foster purebred GSP home to receive further care and treatment. Buddy came to the rescue after being red-lined by a county animal shelter right before Christmas (not so Merry for Buddy). He was very sick and near starvation, all skin and bones, dehydrated, and each breath was difficult. The vet that helps rescue was away for the holidays, so I drove him to urgent care, frightened that he might succumb at any moment. He spent six days being treated for pneumonia and dehydration at the local animal hospital. We visited him every day and as sick as he was he always gave us a little wag of his tail while hooked up to oxygen, IV fluids and receiving pulmonary treatments. His spirit and gentleness endeared him to everyone and made him the favorite of the hospital staff. So Buddy came home to us still breathing with difficulty and after only gaining 9 ounces while in the hospital. He left weighing 42 pounds on a frame that should that should have supported 70 pounds. A dog with a wonderful spirit, he also, thankfully, has a great appetite and is blessed with a great digestive system. In between receiving, quiet bed rest, medicine, steam treatments three times a day with coupage afterwards, he began eating. Oh yes, eating with vigor! By his first week checkup he was breathing without effort at rest, and he had gained an amazing 9 pounds! He was welcomed at the hospital like a long lost friend. Everyone came to see him. Buddy X-rays have showed that his lungs are improving. We still have to continue home treatments (twice a day) and try and keep him calm and quiet. It will be at least another month before we know if he will have any permanent damage to his lungs. In the meantime, he continues to gain weight. He now takes interest in his toys, especially the ball. He naps with Howard in the afternoon and is learning some new manners such as sit , down , off . He is housebroken and waits to be taken out on a leash, and respectful of Howard s shoes that are accessible to him. The sight of a bright eyed, enthusiastic puppy instead of a near death one was only possible because the GSP Rescue took on the debt to make this possible. Credit cards are maxed out and we owe almost $3000.00 for Buddy s hospital and medical expenses. It is the largest amount we have ever tried to raise. We need your help and all of those you know that can help. Take a look at Buddy s album http://picasaweb.google.com/GSPRescue/Buddy?feat=directlink and reach deep. I know no way of starting 2009 off to a better start than giving this guy a new lease on life. A fundraiser has been set up and can be reached from the link on GSP Rescue's website www.GSP-Rescue.org With my eternal gratitude and best wishes for a healthy 2009, Bev - Buddy's Foster Mom
