Hello everybody, I am, or I think I am the newest member here right now. Of course, that will probably change by the time you all read this. Anyhow. I found this forum as a link on a hunting forum that I was reading earlier today.
A little about myself. I am in my 30's (I know, not trolling for dates..ha ha ha) and have been shooting ducks about 17 years, and pheasants about 13 years. I have had some experience with field type dogs having been the owner of a beautiful English setter who is no longer with us. Along the way, I had an opportunity to hunt over a Pair of GSP's, and I fell in love wiht the breed. I have been wanting to get one now for about 10 years. I am finally in the position to get a new pup, and a GSP it will be. Seeing that this seems to be dedicated to the breed, what can you all tell me about how they are gnerally in the house? How do the do with children. I have a 5 year old, and a 1 year old. How do they do with other dogs. I have a fairly active Basset Hound, and a cat that you never see.
I know that they are very active dogs, and I am fine with that. I would say I have done more research since April, than many people will ever do on dog breeds. Most of the answers I get are from people that tell me based on somebody elses dogs, so any real time info would be appreciated.
From what I can find, the bloodlines I am getting into are excellent, or, to me, appear to be. the Sire's side include General Norman, Fancy White Trash, and a few other names I have seen a bit of in the forums. Anything that you might be able to tell me here would be appreciated too.
Thanks in advance. I know I have asked a ton of questions for a first post, but, I am home in 37 days on leave, and I will be meeting with the breeder and picking outa pup. You are more or less, my last line of questioning before I commit 100% |

Bogart is our first GSP (and my first dog ever!). We chose the breed since my husband was looking for a running companion, as well as a quiet and non-shedding breed. Frankly, the first picture of these guys I fell in love. When we finally settled on the breeder I couldn't wait to chose our guy (we met him the first time at 3.5 weeks). Bo is now 7 months old. I can't speak to him as a hunting dog, but he is an amazing animal. We have two cats, and while they are not all sleeping together, they seem to tolerate each other. He is fantastic with all other dogs and small children we have met (none in our house but LOTS in our neighbourhood). He is a curious, intelligent, loving animal; all of which seem to be traits of the breed. He LOVES to play with other dogs (mostly to show off how fast HE can run and will indoubtedly be a great running partner for my husband once he is old enough. |

| Hi! I'm pretty new around here too and we're getting our 1st GSP later this month. We have 2 mini Dachshunds (4 yrs and 2 yrs) now and we've been talking for a couple years about getting a bird dog. My husband goes hunting and has been wanting a dog he can take with him for several years. So we're going to get one. I also go running and am looking forward to taking ours with me when he gets old enough. We went and met the pups last weekend when they were about 4 weeks old...too cute. We know we want a male, but we couldn't decide which one yet (the litter was 5 male/5 female). So, we have 5 boys to choose from! We're going to see them again next weekend when they're a bit older and have some more personality. So we're hoping to pick our boy then. Anyway, welcome! |

Welcome and be ready to be addicted. I bet at this point my husband wished we didn't get our first one cause now we have three! They are great dogs. We have three that are completely different blood lines and thus three totaly different personalities. The only concern I would have with small children would be the dogs size and love to play and they may nock them over on mistake. But saying you will be getting a pup they can all grow up together and learn how to handle eachother. You will find this board to be very much full of information and great support for the breed. Can't wait to se picgtures of the new pup! |

| I have 3 GSP hoodlums and my daughter just turned 2 this weekend. All of ours were pretty well trained and socialized and have been very patient and tolerant with the usual toddler atrocities, although she goes a little slow for them to want to 'hang out' with (unless she's eating-heh). However, we have to more carefully supervise the youngest two dogs to prevent exuberant knock-overs/step-ons. |

Welcome and be prepared for a third active high energy child pup when you adopt a GSP. Have your 5 year old warm up his or her ball toss arm. GSP do make great outfielders and can be trained to drop the tennis ball into the pitcher-parent glove after your child bats the ball you pitched out into the field saving you from running after the ball. GSP's do live a foot off the ground for their first 3 years and can be naughty if left alone in the house too long. (read ROBBED LAST NIGHT thread for some examples.} Holiday season will be coming up and GSP's love openning packages. So make sure the new GSP has some packages to open under this years XMAS tree along with your children and best of luck |

| Hi...welcome to the wonderful world of GSPs. I'm in agreement with what everyone else is saying, but I wanted to add my 2 sense. My GSP, Seven will be 4 in a couple weeks, and I think he has just started to calm down ;-) The puppy will keep you on your toes for the first few years...the key is to find a really good outlet for all that GSP puppy energy. We used to spend hours at the dog park, where Seven would just run and run and run and all the cattle dogs would try to herd him...it was great!!! On the kid topic, my husband and I had a baby, 3 months and ago and he's great with him...very attentive and protective towards the baby. He's also great with my nieces who like to chase him around the house and yard. I'm sure the puppy will be fine with the kids. My advice to you is to keep up with the training...GSPs are very smart and they like to be challenged so you have to keep add new "tricks" making them harder and harder as you go...our GSP gets the paper every morning, except Sunday b/c he can't fit it in his mouth and it ends up all over the front yard. Have fun and remember to laugh...again read some of the entries on robbed last night to see what you're in for :-0...it's all worth it they are great loving family dogs that will attach to someone in your family and turn into his/her tail. Good luck and be sure to post pictures when you get the puppy... |

GSPs are just about like any other breed.A balanced dog comes from the enviroment.A well bred GSP should be calm in the home and a beast while hunting. Are these lines field trial lines,NAVHDA lines? Do you plan on duck hunting? I mention the duck hunting because not all GSPs are cut out for it.It is always good to check what type of hunting the parents and grandparents have done. Like ususally breeds like when it comes to ability and temperment. Post some pictures when you get them. Francine |

I think GSPs are the greatest kids dogs. Ours even learned to jump on the trampoline just to be near the boys. We got our first one kind of by accident and have had 3 over 30+ years. Marie--loved the dog opening his package. Ours always get presents. After all they are family members. |

Hehe! I love the present opening pic!! We always get Buster and Jake gifts too for Christmas. Although we always end up opening them up so they can get at what's inside. Otherwise all they'll do is shake the pacakge around. Lol. I love reading about everyone's dogs and all the fun stuff they do with them (and tricks they teach them). |

They are good with kids, maybe a little "whammy" as my better half calls it. Once mine gets wound up he forgets that he has a back half and bounces it off everything. As far as if they are good in the house I think that depends on the line and how you socialize them.
Mine is usually very in tune with what I'm doing. If I am active so is he, if I'm chilling out he is too. He's a great house dog! However, you SHOULD go and see how the parents act in the house. My bests friends GSP is a tasmainian devil in the house non-stop, regardless of the amount of exercise he is given. I was with him the day he picked out the pup and he's a carbon copy of how his parents acted when in the house. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree! If we would have known they were like that we would have passed. He's a smart dog and a hard running machine, but he pretty much can't leave his kennel while at home b/c of his high\destructive energy in the house. Talk to the breeder when you go to look at the pups and ask him, flat out no build-up, if he's a little squimish or his tone of voice changes you may want to beware. He may tell you they are just active dogs with company, but it shouldn't be like a bomb going off when they enter the room. Then he'll say that all dogs have energy and will expend it, it's up to you how they do it, constructive or destructive. bla bla bla
I guess the short version of what I'm getting at is that pedigrees are nice to look at and can tell you a lot if you are familiar with the dogs in it, but you should go and see how the sire and dam look and behave. The difference between my dog and my buddies dog is night and day! I wouldn't sell mine, and he couldn't give his away.
As far as compatibility goes they are usually are great with other dogs, like most hunting dogs they tend to get along well and have a sweet nature. Usually whatever they are raised with, they will get along with (cats, chickens, etc.). Good luck and enjoy your choosing your GSP, take a lot of pictures and get ready to have some good times b/c that's what GSP's are, fun dogs! |

Hello & Welcome you made a wonderful decision you are going to be hooked. Don't be surprised how fast your new pup will have you wrapped around her/his paw LOL . They are great!! and I look forward to hearing how your making out along the way.
I did not research the breed before I got Ava. I don't hunt with her either. The more I think about it, I know they say you should research the breed or any breed for that matter to see if it fits with your lifestyle. To be honest this is just my situation, I am so glad that I did not research this breed, I would of never got her just by all the exercise part. She has made such a huge impact on my life. I am very back wards LOL and had a hard time talking to people that I didn't know. She makes it easy for me if someone asked me a question about her, I am so comfortable talking to that person and don't feel all flustered LOL. I have never had so much exercise in my life hahahahaha and being the type of person who thinks working out is so boring, this helps to keep a little gravity at bay hahahaha. It makes me happy to go out on walks and is rewarding just to see how happy she is that I am going on a walk with her.
I am so glad that I found her. Now that I have Ava, I have never smiled so much. I catch myself in a dopey daze when we are on our morning walk in the park and she is on the prowl. I am amazed at her patience, how she can stand so still and posed and wait for a squirrel to get a little close to take off to get it and even with birds it's awesome If I were in her place I would of took off long before not wanting to stand like that. If I was a hunter she would really point me out some good ones.
You are in for a great ride!! Enjoy and best of luck to you |

| Beautiful message given about the impact Ava has made on your life. We feel the same about our GSP Rocky. We have become so much more active and involved with life and with other dogs lovers like ourselves. We have gone to places we have never been {parks, lakes, woods, pheasant game farms} ect because of living with our GSP. Yes, we donot have a clue what breeder Rocky came from and we donot care. We just love him the way he is and so thankful he is sharing our lives with us. Very very thankful to WI GSP Rescue and all the GSP Rescue organizations, without GSP Rescue, Rocky would not be with us in his happy forever home. |

I must echo the two previous comments. Rich and I have met sooooo many people and dogs because of Bo. From the first day we brought him home and played with him on our front yard (we live beside a walkway between two streets so LOTS of foot traffic to our regular evening walks with at least one or two dog encounters, he has shown that he is an excellent ambassador of the breed and of dogs in general. We really feel he has enriched our lives and I am getting regular (vigourous!) exercise. |

I agree, my dogs act off of me. If I am lounging they are as well. If I am going outside to play with them or work them they are always ready. They seem to be able to turn it on and off like a light switch. In my experiences with them I have found the females to be more mellow than the boys. Not sure if they are all like that but my Hunter was a nut until he was about 2. Then he became a dog not just the pup. They are great in the house (when we are) I put them in their kennels when not at home. They will get into everything, as they get very upset when you leave them. They will bond with you and you are their pack leader and will always want to be with you. Really are wonderful dogs. They can tell when you are sick or sad and will try to comfort you with putting their head on your leg and giving you the eye rolls telling you "it will be ok, I am here for you" they are very in tune to how you are. They need lots of exercise as well. It doesn't matter if you hunt or not, as long as they can burn some off. I play frisbee with mine. I throw apples from my orchard and it is a mad dash to see who can return it to me. So much fun. Welcome to the GSP world. Post pics when you get him/her. |
