I know this will be happening sometime over the next 6 months when I show Phoenix with the UKC. I think UKC and AKC are pretty much the same in this respect so here is the situation. There will be 4 GSP's for the show.

Phoenix-Female pup

Roxi-Adult but no CH status

1 male GSP pup

1 Female GSP Adult CH

I know Phoenix will be shown in female pup class. Will she then show against the male to decide best puppy? (it would be in the 6-12 mo class)?

Next I know Roxi will show in Open and the other female in the CH class. Will we then have Roxi,Phoenix and the CH in the ring together to decide best female or will Roxi and Phoenix show against eachother and then the best of that be shown against the CH to decide best female?

I am just trying to figure out how many handlers I need as Phoenix is mine and Roxi is mine on co-ownership.

Plus I want to make sure I understand what to expect at this point when I am there. I don't want to look like a total idiot! :-)

Now in this case saying there is only one male will the best female compete against that pup to take BOB?

Sorry for all the questions.... :-)

Here is how it goes for both AKC (UKC is pretty much the same although the points are different):

1) All the males in the various classes show first.

2) The winners of each male class (Puppies, Open, BB, etc) show against each other for Winners Dog and Reserve.

3) Then the same for females and Winners Bitch and Reserve.

4) All the Specials (CH) and the Winners Bitch and Winners Dog go into the ring for Best of Breed. Out of this BOB, Best of Opposite Sex and Best of Winners is picked.  The Best of Winners is between the Winners Bitch and Winners Dog and is important is it can mean more points for the BOW.

The only dogs that can earn points toward their title are the dogs in the classes. The major difference between UKC and AKC is in how the dogs earn points.  You can go to the UKC and AKC websites for that, but don't be surprised if you have a hard time understanding the point progression at first.

This is a high level overview.  If you want a more detailed explanation a good book for beginners is Dog Showing for Beginners by Lynn Hall (this is based on AKC, but close enough to UKC).

Let me know if you have more questions.

Ok so in my example

Phoenix and Roxi would compete against eachother. Then whomever wins that would then go to compete against the  CH female and the male puppy for BOB correct?

Or am I off base on this??

Thanks!

Yes, you are correct. Class dogs (males), then Best Male (Winners Dog in AKC), Class Females, then Best Female (Winners Bitch in AKC), then, in UKC, Champion class (males and females judged together), Grand Champion class (males and females judged together), then Best Male, Best Female, winner of the Champion class, winner of the Grand Champion class compete for Best of Breed

At some shows, there can be a special, non-regular (carries no points) competition for Best Puppy. I have never seen that in UKC, but I assume it could happen. I would think it would be judged after regular judging.

Not to worry, the ring steward calls out numbers and so you will know when to go in.

And, of course, in UKC, Phoenix can pick up points from the Puppy class, but no competition wins, unless she beats the other female.
