I just wanted to let you all know that I am working on a GSP rescue in West Michigan. I know there are a couple other rescues in Michigan but nothing in the West Michigan. If anyone in our area is intersted in fostering etc. let me know. We have yet to set up our non-profit information but are getting things under way. I have two dogs from local shelters that I would like to bring in as well as soon as I can. Thanks!

Beth, FIRST, fill out appl with National GSP Rescue. That will open doors for networking. Then you get networking, and before you know it, you will be a full fledged rescue. First get the corporation set up. 501c3 paper work takes forever, and costs money, you DO NOT NEED IT REALLY. You just gotta get the word out, in all the right places.

Actually GSP Rescue PA received IRS approval two weeks after we sent in our application back in 2002.  We had to wait for the mandatory 30-day wait for our check to the IRS to be cashed (they only trust God :-) ;) before we received the official letter and we've never looked back on getting our 501(c)(3). It's more expensive now to apply but the advantages far outweigh anything else.  Actually I can't think of any negatives.

Quite a number of shelters and fundraising avenues and individual supporters in Pennsylvania (and elsewhere) will not work with a rescue program unless it has attained the federal nonprofit status.

Thank you both for the information. Where do I go to get the paper work to file for the 501(c)(3)? Is there somewhere online I can print the paperwork? Thanks again! I appreciate it.

You can get 501c3 ppr work off IRS website, download from there...but there are many things you need to get done before that. For instance, write Articles of Incorporation, get your EIN number from your state, then for 501c3 BiLaws, etc... It only cost us $150- filing fee, IF you estimate your donations to be less then a certain amount, if you estimate it to be on the higher end, your filing fee is more. If you underestimate, IRS will just charge you more later. They review your status I believe every four years. Merely getting 501c3 does not produce instant gratification. You have to work it, PUSH it to get companies on board to support you for the tax write off. It took us months to be approved for PetCo Foundation....I'm still weighing the benefits... it's alot of strategic paper work, you have to account for everything!

Thank you, thank you, Beth foir taking the lead on this! I will be happy to help in some way. Are you planning to have a booth at the Dog Show in Grand Rapids in November? Several rescue groups do -- and that might be a good idea even if you don't have dogs for adoption yet. We could take our own and get folks interested. Cathy

Cathy-
Ya know... I hadn't thought about the show in November really. I was thinking about taking my male GSP and putting him in rally if I can figure out if he would do ok.... he is very obediant I just can't figure out what all the descriptions of tasks are. :-)
Where are you located Cathy? I will PM you as well.

Our website is now up and running. It is a start at least. I am sure it will grow as we do.

Our female rescue also looks as though she may be expecting. The vet could not tell yet for sure. So we will wait it out a bit. Her HW test came back positive. Vet said he wants to wait 6 months to treat her so that way we KNOW all the adult HW are mature. He also said she should be fine for quite a while so we will go on a day by day basis. If for some reason she takes a turn for the worse we will have to start treatment earlier. He just wants to make sure we get it all in one treatment. Lets costly and invasive I guess.

Had a call today about a male GSP that someone can't keep due to him becoming distructive after them having a baby. I wish that some people would think about their future plans before deciding to get a high energy dog! We will see if we can get a foster home lined up for him. At least he is up to date on shots and is already fixed. So that will make him much easier to find a foster for. No multiple trips to the vet office and such!

Kind of makes you wonder how they are going to do with a child----especially a teenager. I don't advocate keeping a dog that is a danger to the child but if they don't have the patience to get the dog through the situation they are in for some big surprises a ways down the road with the child.

Yeah I know what you mean. It sounds like the breeder of this dog was a jerk too though. Now they can't get ahold of him to get help from him either. I may have a foster home lined up for him so we will see. For how young he is and if we can get some obedience done with him and then see how he is with birds maybe we will get him into a good home fast. The person who is thinking about fostering is a preserve owner so the dog would get a lot of bird time. So that is good. I am really going to advise them to not get any more GSP's. It sounds like this is their 3rd one they have had to re-home in 5 years!!!! You would think they would get the point by now!

I think some people want a "TV" dog. You don't have to train it or feed it or clean up after it. It just shows up when it is supposed to and completes the domestic setting---kind of like on TV. Unfortunately for these people there are more similarities than differences in raising children and dogs---like constant expectations for behavior.

Our female rescue had three pups today. We talked to the old "owner" of her and he said his 1 year old male got locked up with her but he thought he would be too young to do anything to her........rrrr.......
He is more than willing to help us get the pups registered to be able to have a paper trail with them when they get adopted. Very nice looking pups. Two solid liver and one liver and white. Mom did well and is happy taking care of the pups. Pictures to come soon.

Those pups look black to me.  Was dad a shorthair?

He was a shorthair. And he was liver and white. I too thought they looked black when born but the little female(last picture) really was looking a nice dark liver when I left and was more dried off. It must be the camera too as the mother is not that dark in person. She is lighter like a milk chocolate color in person.

That seems like a real small litter for a GSP. They are so cute but you have to wonder what kind of care Momma had. Hopefully life will get better for her.

My males mom had a litter of two after him. Then went back to having the litters of 10-15. I am happy it is only three especially for my wonderful foster parents sake. They have been great and I couldn't do it with out them!
