Guiding one of my released bird pheasant hunts a couple of days ago I had
three pointing dogs locked up. One english pointer. On english setter and
a cross english pointer and shorthair cross. Beautiful point. All three
within 5-10 yards. They are locked up solid. the wind is blowing hard,
I;M on the 4-wheeler with my lab "Tres" I have 6 gunners about 5 yrds
apart. The guns are ab out 10 yards behind the dogs. I say "Tres" to
release the retriever to flush the bird. We are in a 40 yard wide row of
crp that is crotch high. The other side of the isle is winter wheat that
is only anckle high. "Tres" jumps off of the wheeler and goes in and
makes the flush. The bird goes up in front of the dogs and the guys shoot
it The big pointer and the lab race to the bird and the lab grabs it and
starts back. Because of the wind and the wheeler running I can't hear.
The pointers start fustling through the cover back towards the guns. I
can't hear but think thay say theres another bird and there were a couple
of birds that had flown to the area where we were. One of the gunners
starts dancing a gigg. I meet the lab and grab the bird and Yell. 'wHAT
iS iT??? a PIG. A what> A PIG. I'm on my way to the dogs and as I get
there the pointer has a pig about 30-35 lbs by the ear or throat right by
the ear. The pig is screaming bloody murder and the pointer is growling
and my setter is trying to bite the shout. The dog , pig and all went
right between the leggs of one of the gunners. I didn't know what to do,
I had shocked the pointer trying to get him to turn loose but NO. So I
stood there watching and the pig started to get real quiet so I asked
does anyone have a knife and someone handed me a knife and I leaned over
and got a good aim and stuck the pio between the ribs and killed it. I
guess I have versitile dogs Huh!!!!!!!!!!
