Almost two weeks ago Phoenix had her last set of shots. A DHPP and Rabies. She still has about a dime size lump between her shoulder blades. You can't see it but can feel it if you run your hands over her. Do you think we will have issues if this doesn't clear up for the show ring? I know it is from the shot as it is the exact spot it was given. I have heard this can happen but we havn't really been into showing before. I just don't want a judge thinking she has some issue with her structure due to the shot causing a lump! |

One reason I give my own shots... When you do the sub-Q you can then rub the area between your thumb and forefinger which helps distribute the vaccine. You might try rubbing on the area lightly, but I think its probably too late for that now. Sooo, when are your first shows. It will go away, and odds are that not that much importance will be given to a site injection bump anyway. When will she be six months old? Just for future reference, I'd give rabies (IM) and parvo booster (SQ) three weeks apart. Better chance for good immunities with both. Phyllis and Tribe |

I had a judge totally overlook Terra when she had a lump from a vaccine given a few days before a show. It was the first time any of my dogs ever had that happen. The judge started examining Terra and then got to the lump. I told her it was from a Bordatella vaccine. She stopped going over my dog at that point never getting past her shoulders. Needless to say, I'll never show to this particular judge again. Gail |

Wow that seems harsh! Geesh. My girl will be 6 months in January. I was going to put her in a fun match this weekend. I know it is a fun match but I want to have confidence in showing her and her have confidence in the ring too. I did give my own shot for the distemper shot but not the rabies as it wouldn't be considered to be a valid rabies for licensing reasons in our county. I can buy the rabies shot just not give it! |

Go to the fun match ! Its as much good practice for you as for Phoenix, and if the judge does have a problem with it, well, too bad for the judge. I'd mark them off my list too. Yes, NM is the same with the rabies, except we can't even buy them...they have to be gotten at the vet's office. It sounded like the two vaccines were given the same time. Phyllis and the Tribe |

I agree with Phyllis, go to the match and have fun.
Just for reference Halo gashed her side outside and I still showed her. It was healed, but there was still a scar. It was not on her show side, but the judge noticed and said working dog, and gaves her winners bitch anyway. So, I know this doesn't have to do with shots, but it is not supposed to be a fault if they have scars or cuts, etc as they are supposed to be hunting dogs. Good thing too as Halo has now gashed herself twice and has some nice scars, both on her non-show side though. I guess she was paying attention like the good show girl she is and wanted to keep her show side looking nice. In any case the scars have faded and the hair has grown back so they don't really show now.
If a judge stops and passes on a dog for an obvious bump from a shot I would just put that judge in the "Don't show under this judge" column and move on.
Let us know how the match turns out. |

We had a very good time at the show, A judge that will go on my hopefully short list to not show under again though. I don't mind that Phoenix didn't place between her and the other puppy who was under 6 months old but I do mind the reason given. But first I will give you all a run down of our day.
We took 3 dogs to the show.
Tundra to do Weight Pull wich she didn't do much of at all unless I had given her a tug on the collar and then she pulled. She just needs to learn what is going on. But that disqualifies us from getting any points or anything toward a title. No biggy. Just something to work on with her. When she did pull she pulled about 400 lbs and she only weighs 37!
Phoenix to do the Non Licensed puppy class. Here is our run down on this class. First she was the only female pup so she was in the ring by herself. The judge NEVER let me finish stacking before going over her. Just started running her hands all over her. I was praising her for being a good girl the entire time but I thought that was rude. I don't care if it is a pup class or not at least let the handler get the dog stacked for goodness sake! Then we went back in the ring with the male pup. Both pups were having fun and when we were done taking them around the male pup who was in front decided to potty. No biggy. But the ENTIRE time the other person was cleaning up Phoenix was standing in a still stack and NEVER budged a muscle. The other gal finished cleaning and didn't even finish stacking and the judge said "So and so you diserve first place because you had to deal with all that in the ring"...meaning the pee and clean up. Don't get me wrong he is a VERY VERY nice dog and he may have taken first anyway either way but to give that for a reason is just pathetic IMO! Here are pics of Phoenix stacked the entire clean up process. Sorry they are blurry!

Then was Roxi (well she actualy showed before the pups). She is a female we co-own with a friend. Is 3 years old and has never been stacked or even had seen a show ring. She did awesome! Gaited like an ol pro! Judge said to me on her to make sure we work on the "growling" when in fact she wasn't growling. She was doing what I call the GSP snort. Kinda of sounds like you are clearing your nose into your throwt. She said she didn't care and it didn't bother her but some judges may not see it this way. I explained to her the noise Roxi makes and she said to still watch it. So not sure really how to take that. But Roxi did well. Here is a stack pic of her.....

She was the only adult so she ended up earning 25 pts. toward her CH title but still needs to get some competition wins in the future. But over all a good start to the new show career for her. And to think a year ago she came in as a rescue dog who was HW positive and about 15 lbs under weight! What a cool dog she has become! |

Idiot Judge...what a stupid thing to say. A match is for learning, so you did the right thing but I would be so pissed...really! So it was a regular show then since Roxi earned points. I would have spoken with the show chair regarding the judge's comments. They are unnecessary and unwarranted, and she would have been wise to keep her mouth shut. Looks like the girls did okay, tho. Tundra will be fine, just keep working with her. Glad you had fun and enjoyed the day, in spite of your competition (that being the judge, not the other dog). Thanks for the comments guys. We did have a great time and yeah it was a regular show with a non licensed puppy class for pups under 6 months. It really did boost my confidence that both girls behaved so well in the show ring and seemed to really enjoy what they were doing! |

Nice pics...both dogs are nice but I especially like Phoenix. Fat chance to take Tessa at that age to a show, she'd be all over the judge and I have a hard time stacking her. Phoenix looks beautiful. Re judge, I guess that's why I am not sure I want to go the show route...will start with some matches just to see but would hate to waste my money and time on an event with that type of judge (even if it's the exception). Rather be walking through a field... |

I agree. With this show it was only $5 to enter Phoenix. She gave a mutch longer and better look at Roxi the adult. Really went over her well and even in the group ring felt like she at least looked in our direction. That is more than I have ever had a judge do before. I also know it will be more of a challange with both dogs because of their color. UKC just let blacks in 2007 so some judges won't place one. Also many judges don't like all the liver that roxi has. So we are kind of in a crap shoot. But I know they are put together well so it will just be a lot of hard work. These two will also be hunters. I do agree I would much rather hunt. But at lass there is no open seasons now and I really don't want to pay for birds at the preserve with the way the weather has been! |

A crappy judge....doesn't or shouldn't mean you don't show. It means you right now start yourself a little card file. 5x8 or 3 x 5. Alphabetize it, and each time you show write down the judge's name (that's where the alpha comes in), what they did, if they put you up or dumped you, and what they did put up if it wasn't your dog. At the bottom put down your comments and the judge's comments if they said anything. just a few notes will be fine...good with puppies, impatient, looked at the handler first. And finally a rating ...show to again or show to always, DNS (do not show to), give another chance, etc. Usually I'll give a judge 3 strikes and then they will be out of there...if I can follow what they are doing but they didn't like my dog on that day but did say something about it, etc. If they only like light colored dogs, then Roxi wouldn't be the one to show that person. I one time showed three different type dogs to a woman down at the San Antonio show. One lighter boned girl, one large girl with light ticking, and one dark blanketed male. She dumped all three...I think we got "fifth out of five"...LOL! so immediately she was off my list. ...That was her three chances and she was very much out of there..LOL! Its also fun to go back years later and read your notes and see how true those notes can be. Phyllis and tribe Singltrak |
