I bought a GSP puppy about 3 months ago from a guy that trained and owned trial and gun champion Shorthairs. The father came from a long list of field champions and was a beautiful dog. The mother of the puppies was a dog that his wife saved from a rescue group that wasnt taking care of and abusing 9 shorthair puppies. The mother doesnt have papers. Is there any way to petition for registration papers. The puppy I bought is exceptonal. I have never owned any bird dog with as much talent and easy to train so some of my buddies want one of her puppies but I am afraid I wont be able to sell all of them if it is a large litter.

First of all, it is very smart of you to think ahead on being sure that all your pups have wonderful forever homes. From your other post, I gather that this is the six month old puppy that you are considering breeding....don't !

Firstly, she is way too young, 2 years should be the minimum age for breeding and secondly, you will feel better about breeding any dog if you have done a minimum of OFA hips and some other health testing.(and that can't be done before age 2). I would think twice, also, about breeding any dog that is unregistrable. Not only is she unregistrable, but the puppies would be also.

You ask if there is any way to petition for registration paperwork. No. You can apply for what was at one time called an ILP (Indefinite Listing Privilege) that will allow you to compete in hunt tests and obedience. AKC has now changed the name, but if you go to their website at http://www.akc.org and do a search for ILP, it will give you the information you are seeking to apply. You will need to provide photographs of the dog and verification from knowledgeable individuals (your vet, a breeder, etc.) that in their opinion the dog is a German Shorthaired Pointer. I think that you must also provide verification that the dog is spayed or neutered but not sure about that.

As far as your buddies wanting one of her puppies...well, let 'em be jealous and enjoy her. Been there, done that, and you'd be surprised how quickly that desire for a "pup just like that" will disappear when the puppies actually are there and available.

Hug on her and let her be your best buddy (hunting and bed both). Just don't breed her.

The new name for ILP is PAL and you do have to have the dog spayed or neutered.  You don't need anything from a vet if you have the pictures and the pedigree on the fathers side.

I have a female GSP that has her ILP and it was pretty easy to get.  I did have her full pedigree as she was field registered which made it easier, but I have a friend who had a rescue lab and all she had to show were pictures to get her ILP.

I agree with singltrak on the breeding.  Most people want registered dogs and there is no way this dog will have and AKC registration.  Not fair to you or the puppies that you will have to find homes for.  Plus, to get an ILP/PAL listing they have to be spayed/neutered.
