Does anyone else have a shorthair that is in serious shed mode right now?  My female is losing tons of hair and sweeping up behind her is my never ending task.  What time of year do your shorthairs shed the most?  I live in central Ohio and it has been 85-90 the last couple of weeks.

Yeah, mine can do a spring/fall coat blow. Many seasonal animal things- like esterous or egg laying- are not controlled by temperature as much as the changing of the light-days (think chicken house lights). I would guess dogs probably have at least a little of that mechanism at work.

I've personally had the best luck using a metal shedding blade for horses. I rake it in short firm strokes against the grain of the coat, especially around through the neck and shoulders where it seems the hair is heaviest, then with the coat to remove the wads of hair that it's lifted. Obviously you have to be careful since pointers are bony, and they don't like this procedure much, but it seems to remove WAY more dead hair at once than the usual brushing.

I have a rubber curry mit from my former horse days that helps a ton (red rubber mitten with little nubs on it).  And since it's soft and flexible, it doesn't cause our furry critter any discomfort.  You could pick one up at any saddle shop/farm store.

I used one of those metal shedding blades on my horses and it worked GREAT--but Otto is so thin skinned, bony, and has so little body fat, I just can't imagine using one on him.

I was just going to mention that too, I use the grooma curry comb on my pups. It seems to work really well, the dogs actually like it too. Really takes off the hair, kinda massages them, and then I follow with a regular brush to remove the hair and dirt and shine them up. I guess I groom them like a horse--next I'll be picking out their feet!

I think the Grooma kids size for horses is cheaper than the dog Groomas they sell at pet stores too. The kid size is perfect, you don't need a big one on a dog. I actually use a horse face brush to finish the job.

We just spent several days with my son and wife and their 120# Newfie. I will never complain about my shorthair shedding ever again.

Matt, get a Zoom Groom, by Kong, in 28 yrs of grooming and using every tool out there, these are BY FAR the best tool for shedding out short-coated dogs. I absolutely love them! Work much better than rubber currys or shedding blades, especially if you wipe them on a damp cloth & then brush the dog with them.

We started giving the dogs omega-3 w/ Flax & Borage oil & it has really cut down on the shedding. We tried just fish oil & that didn't work, so we just get the kind at Walmart for people. I give them 2 a day

My dogs food has the omega 3 in it and I give them fish oil. It makes the coats so shiny but the white ones are still shedding terribly. The fish oil got rid of the flaky skin. What kind are you using? I brush mine regularly but my wife hates the hair on the furniture.

We tried just fish oil too & only noticed a mild deference. The Omega-3 with Flax Oil & Borage Oil seems to work a lot better. I discovered this when after trying several shed-stop products with little or no results. Pet-co sales lady then said I should try "Shed Defence " pills. & within 2 weeks Ruger was hardly shedding at all. The only problem was that although the bottle of 60 tablets was only 8.99 he weighs 75 pounds & had to take around 7-8 pills a day. When I looked on the ingredients it was Flax oil, Borage oil, Sunflower & Safflower oils. Buying the people capsules is a better way to go.

Thanks for the info. Is there a certain size milligram pill you are using? My food for the dogs has the omega in it already and I use the fish oil right now. I will look in Walmart when we get to town. Thanks
