Makes me think that a dog that do not back another dog at point but steals the point by placing itself in front of the dog that found the bird, is dominant. Now, if this dominant dog holds the point until given permission to flush by the handler, then I guess it considers the handler of being the superior leader of the pack and it considers itself to be number two???
If this is the case, then in our field trials we do not actually judge a dogs backing willingness but its rank in the pack and should it in addition flush without permission then it is put out, actually, not for flushing without permission, but for being the leader of the pack, including the handler. In other words we do not estimate the dogs working ability and skill but the handlers degree of leadership over the pack - an interesting view of field trials as a mean of selecting breeding animals!
Seriously: There is a good deal of nice genetic material put aside from breeding because we do not actually measure the dogs ability but the handlers ability...
