I am new to all of this.  I won't even have my PUP until Dec 27.  From reading here and other places alot goes into breeding dogs.  But just as a question.  If everything goes perfect with my pup.  What would I want to do to make him an attractive stud dog?  How do I do it.  I get the field trials and so on but how about the medical parts.  Then the next question is what benifits does the stud "family" get.  I know that some people list them with Fee's, but do they get pick of the litter and fee or what is SOP for that?

Just curious!

Thanks,

Nate

Nate, a lot will depend on your pups pedigree, he can be the best dog in the world but wihout successful dogs behind him to prove he isn't a fluke, no one will breed him (OK, some will).
Put as many titles on him as you can, get all the health clearances you see as important (ofa and cerf at a minimum).
Benefits, depending on your dog. I believe the stud fee is the price of a pup (ie 900 dollar puppies, 900 dollar stud fee), or a pup. If I have a friend that wants a pup, I will sometimes take a pup and sell it to the friend for less then the pup fee. I have in the past with some who's females aren't going to warrant a 900 dollar pup, taken two pup prices or 600 dollars which ever is more.
Then be prepared for the fun, keep in mind that I don't advertise any studs and still get the calls, so I guess if you advertise you have them it probably triples. Most call and want you to take a pup, get offended when you don't want them. I turn most down as the bitch isn't titled anywhere and they can't/won't bring her to me to see her work, then they get really pissed off. Had one guy drive up from KS with a bitch that had a mouth like snaggletooth, got really pissed off when I wouldn't let it happen(he told me on the phone her bite was perfect). I haven't had this happen (knock on wood), and maybe because of all of the above, if something goes wrong with a pup for the bitch owner to blame your dog all over the country, because we all know it is never the bitches fault!
All in all don't plan on making any money, once you invest the money in the pup/health clearances/ and thousands and thousands of dollars training, testing, trailing, very few stud dogs 'make' money. Some do, but they are the stars of the breed with very strong pedigrees to back them up.

Trey-
Thanks for the reply. I am by no means looking to make any money. I was just wondering how the hole thing worked. My only thought was if We do well training together and I enjoy it, then it would be a good way to get another Pup that will have traits I like and know.
