Some time ago Marg from NZ recommended me to buy and read a book with the name Merle's Door by Ted Kerasote. I ordered one from www.amazon.com and there I found both new and used at no big cost. I got it a few days ago.

Ted's website is found here http://www.kerasote.com/index.html

The base for the book is outdoor life, including hunting. The main motive is Merle, a young Golden retriever-like abandoned dog that Ted found in a national park. Weaved into the life of Ted and Merle is a very knowledgeable scientific part about dogs origin and behaviour, written in a splendid way, to say at least!

I started to read the book as a normal book but very soon I found that I too would start to love Merle to the inevitable end with her death. Since I have already cried enough this year due to the loss of our Foxy I decided that I have had enough of that. However I jumped from one of the scientific parts to another, that interest me more than getting emotional, and what I read there was alone worth more than  the cost.

To start with it in all essence confirmed the article "Mans best friend" that Cj initiated me to work out for our website. Now, I am sure that Cj knows what he is writing about but I am not at all that so sure about me :-))

I just have during the years collected knowledge on the old floppy drive in my head. It is knowledge that I, at the moment I saved to the floppy disk,  have felt is credible but I have not made any notes about its origin and hence, when I use it many years afterwards I am not sure if I tell the truth or talk wildly. This also happened when I wrote the introduction to Cj's article.

Now, after reading Merle's door I feel a lot safer :-)))

I can really recommend the book. Ted has deep understanding in dogs and can really convey the message to the reader. And some day I will read it from page to page....

You should never read the last pages of a book until you reach them Torsti.
It spoils the book.

I have a bit screwed up relation to novel books. When I sailed world-wide I read perhaps thousands of them, as well as private eye books like Mike Hammer and such rubbish,  and then one day I had had enough and simply can't read a novel or any other fiction anymore. Works of fact are still very OK, as are books of humour. We also had cinemas on those ships and I saw a huge amount of movies. Today I can see some old Clint Eastwood movie but hardly anything more serious fiction. Peter Sellers Pink Panther series is OK as many other comedies.

On the other hand I am still thinking about buying a video camera and make some gundog and clay shooting videos. The camera I would like to have is rather expensive but that may not be the biggest problem. The biggest problem is to find a good speaker, preferably someone who speaks good English also. Such persons, who in addition would work for nothing, just for the fun of it, do not grow on trees - as we use to say :-))

From my old, now dead, camcorder I learned that it is not that difficult to get a good picture. The sound, however, is very difficult to get really right. There is a reason why the professionals always have a separate technician for the sound.
