A friend of mine came
by to visit from Alaska (Gereth). He
had never hunted desert quail so I took him
out
on a quail hunt on Saturday with two of my
hunting buddies. Between us we took six dogs (GSP's)
and most of them had a good
workout.
The day started out slow with only three coveys put up by
noon. Things got really busy in the
afternoon. We put up 13 coveys from noon to 4:00 pm. Our
last covey ended up being two coveys
intermingled.
The first was a
covey of gambles, the second a covey of scalies. For the most part we had
mixed
birds all day. All in
all the birds were pretty spooky and the scenting conditions were poor.
We
finally had some
really nice dog work in the afternoon. Gereth's gun was acting up and he
missed a lot of
opportunities to bag a lot of birds. Towards the end of the day he did
manage
to shoot some gambles.
It was in the mid sixties, almost short sleeve weather.
What a fun day!!!

Now the story of our and Cjs stone age dog is out
on our website. You will find it in Torstis corner as "Mans best friend". In
order to use as many as possible of the pictures I took of rock
paintings and carvings, I had to write a pretty long introduction to Cjs article
about mans evolution together with dogs.
Maud will continue to improve the smallest details
in order to squeeze in as much as possible of the photomaterial without
extending the text. Such work is time consuming. So there will be minor changes
in the days to come but nothing that affects the whole.
