Just wondering how many breeders out there get there bitches palpated? We went to the vet to get our bitch palpated and she is so muscly that the vet could on feel that she was definalty pregnant and not count the pups. Just wondering what other peole have experienced!

I don't bother with palpation. My vet is very good, but he still can't accurately palpate on my very muscular and lean field dogs. Also, I always worry about the small, but still possible, risk of damage to the growing fetuses.

I had the vet palpate Terra after we had done an AI breeding this summer. She felt at least 6 fetuses and we had 7. I didn't do it for the count but to confirm the pregnancy. In the past, I have ultrasounded but the vet who does that procedure is far from and me and his counts are always way off. I like to know that my girl is pregnant for sure so we can increase food appropriately. If she's not we can back to all our normal dog activities, agility, flyball etc.

We just had x-rays done instead of palpation. He let us keep the x-ray. I still look at it from time to time!
