The latest scam perpetrated on the American dog owner is the ultrasonic flea collar, a battery operated device that's supposed to drive fleas away from your dog. The first problem is that they don't work, fleas ignore them. The second, and perhaps greater problem is that they generate sound that is well within the dog's hearing capability of roughly up to 40,000 cps. The question is what does daily constant exposure to pulsing sound at such levels do to the quality of a dog's life? I'll leave it for you to decide. Cj

Maybe one could be activated/deactivated via remote control (FRS/GMRS radio or via a standard ecollar rigged to activate the switch) and used for one-way "silent" communication with the dog. I strappeda little FRS radio to the collar of one of my dogs once. he didn't like it at all. Perhaps it bothered him to hear my voice coming from a spot close to his ear and see me 100 yards away; or maybe the click of the beast when the squelch broke was what set him off - dunno. There are no problems to do it technically and there should not be any problems to train a young dog to get used to it. Many Swedish moosehounds are today connected to both satelite and the cell-phone net and with a modern cell-phone equiped with proper maps you could from Alaska or any other place on earth with GSM coverage call the dog in Sweden and get its position and hear it barking. It is just a question of time before they put a video camera on the dogs head so that you can also see what it is barking at. If it is barking at the wrong animal you can with the phone command it to drop that animal and go ans search for something better.....
Oh shit! Did I dial the wrong number and call someone elses dog and told it to go home? I hope they do not find out...

The possibilities are endless... Think of the competitive advantage direct communication with another's dog would afford in a field trial/// Second snow here today. About 3 cm so far and not falling now. About -3°C Jere > > There are no problems to do it technically and there should not be any problems to > train a young dog to get used to it.
