Buddy earned his NA Prize 1 this weekend with 110 points, Buddy did a great job and made us both proud at 8 months. |

Congrats Chris and Buddy! We didn't fair quite as well. Stella got a 92 prz III. We got a 2 in search and 2 in track. The judges didn't like her close work during the field portion, but she found and pointed 3 birds and handles very nice. Everytime I ask her to turn or come she listens. We may try again next spring before she turns 1.

Thanks all, Buddy had 2 points deducted on the tracking, instead of entering the woods on the track, he kinda smelled around the edge of the woods then returned to the track in the field, then tracked to the woods again and wood not go in, who knows why??? |

I'm coming in so late on these discussions...
I was at a training day two weeks ago there was a dog that would not go in the woods where the pheasant was. Not into the shadow of the woods either. Turns out, they had an invisible fence which ran along the edge of the woods, so the dog would not proceed past that point.
Not sure if that is your situation, just thought I bring it up. |

How do the invisible fences work? I thought the dog needed to wear something on it's collar in order for the fence to work. or does the fence zap anything that passes?
This is something the hosting club should have ben aware of and not held catagories in the area of the fence.
Good way to ruin a puppy or a somewhat timid dog. |

I am sure Tessa meand the dog in question had an invisable fence at home to prevent it going into the woods, not that there was one at the test site.

Trey, exactly. The owners of the dog had invisible-fenced their backyard which borders on woods. I never had such a fence so I don't know what the instructions say but I think you are supposed to run the boundary through adjacent woods, if there are woods, and if possible. Because now, the dog had been conditioned to getting zapped at a treeline.
There was no invisble fence at the trainings site. All the dogs went into the patch of woods except this one, and when it was discussed, that was the only logical conclusion.
Francine, I think once the dog has been conditioned with the collar that goes with the fence, they don't necessarily need to wear the collar for the fence to be effective...unfortunately, in this case, it became a traveling invible fence  |

| I think I figured out Buddy's reason after some thought, at that time Buddy had only been on quail and a few pheasant that were planted in fields. As I try to remember back his first 8 months, I think he was only in the woods 1 or 2 times as a pup with no birds, so I think I messed that up because of lack of exposure. Now of course he hunts all types of cover regardless. |

I guess that was an easier, or at least more "natural" fix (up the exposure) than having to recondition from messed up fence training.

Murphy acheived a Prize I with 110 points yesterday on the NA as well! We are beyond proud 
He got 4 on everything except the tracking, which he received a 3. The pheasant somehow crossed over a dirt road/track and out of the "field" area and he never found it... interestingly enough right after Murf finished they moved the tracking test over to another field and the rest of the dogs who ran it managed to score perfectly (all the other dogs that had run on the previous field did not). Ah well...  we'll take the Prize I and be perfectly happy!! |

| MurfsMa, I don't think they need to find the pheasant in NA but ha, that happened to us. Yesterday my track started just a few feet from where everyone had parked, trucks, screeching pheasants in boxes, dogs, etc. Today, they walked the dogs up into a field way out, where the track started. I think all 10 got 4 on tracking, most found the pheasant. I really do think Tessa would have done better if away from the commotion and surrounded by just field. |
