Well, for a while now hes been running with other dogs, on birds etc etc. And it seems now that when he knows were going to a place to excercise where there most likly isnt any birds. He just doesn't want to run a lot. He loves to run just to run. But he seems to be getting more bored of it. What would help this problem? Get another one for some competition? :P

What kind of area are you talking about? All of mine are pretty much after they are 2 or 3 years old, seem to know to conserve energy for the hunt, they don't run aimlessly about in an area that is not for hunting, a quick check, and the fact that I am not dressed for 'hunting' or 'training' tells them. They lay around the house, when in the yard, take care of business and chase anything that is in the area, then come lay in the house some more. I run them on the road (dirt) out of the truck or with the four wheeler when I need to excersise them and don't feel like going on a long walk myself. If you mean you are taking him to a fenced area with very short grass and he isn't running around that is the most likely problem, but, if you are talking him for walkes in cover and he isn't hunting, and always has before, I would start looking into health issues (injury, soreness).

I take him to the hills. There is a lot of various covers where birds could be, there just isn't, and he knows it. Its in the hills and mostly for grazing cattle. Just seems pointless for me to drive an hour to have him trot along the trail no faster than he could on a walk.

There is no injuries or anything hes just seems bored. But he will run in places he knows there's no birds when there are some other dogs to show off to. I was just wondering if this was just him catching on and knowing whats hunting , training, and whats not.

Well, the dead give a way fro my dogs is if I am carring a gun or not. I would just start roading or biking him and save yourself the drive. Do you have any dirt roads where you are? Be careful of too much work on paved roads, especially if he is under two years old.

I agree with Trey 100%.  My dogs know the difference between hunting, training, testing and just going on a walk.  They act differently according to which thing we're doing.  It doesn't take them long to figure this out either.

Mine always ratchet up their game from hyper to hysteria when they see a shotgun going with their field bag. I try to have several areas to exercise them so they don't get totally tired of just running. My last large male would chase jacks for fun whenever we were in the desert for exercise. He knew we weren't training or hunting by the lack of gear I guess. My 5 yr old female never changes her attitude though; she's always full bore regardless. She'll run until she drops if I don't watcher her, especially in the desert heat. My 1.5 year old is still very much a large pup. He still thinks a paper towel tube is the next best thing since sliced bread. Come to think of it, he thinks everything is. When they both see a leash, they know they are going for a civilized walk and act accordingly.

There are  tests we participate in that have empty field searches.A hunting dog ought to search any area, birds or not.Running on pasture with cow smells ought to drive him to trot or gallop around looking for more scents.

If there is no problem during hunting you probably have nothing to worry about.Game scents will often cause a dog to overlook being tired, ill, sore, ect so you may want to check him out anyway.

He is probably reaching a maturity stage and this is typical of older dogs who know the routine.

There is definatly no problem then, He goes full bore when he smells a bird. Or he has another dog to run with. He just gets bored i think. Taking him tomorrow to go train so we will know for sure.

Oh and most of the roads around here are atleast covered with rocks to keep the dust down. Most of it is in the hills like fire roads. Where I can't take an atv etc. Would have to be on bike or foot.. and that aint happenin'!

Justin, I think that Beau is about the same age as our Juno - Just under 2 years. I have noticed the same thing about him lately. Where he used to just go and go, now he will go for a while but then he will also spend a lot of time just walking beside us....slowly...wierd. It almost seems like he is lazy or tired but I've decided that he is just maturing a bit. He also used to play fetch forever until we had to stop but lately he will often just kind of give up and quit after a while.

I am very much missing his puppy energy but I am enjoying a bit of maturity. There are always those puppy days still and from what I've heard with the GSP there always will be.

Good luck.

Justin, I have noticed our GSP Rocky slowing down this summer. Rocky will be 6 years old this December. Out in the back yard where we toss the tennis ball, used to have to toss it for 1hour and half Rocky's first 4 years before he would want to quit. Now when he is tired he will just stand there in front of us and not move or heads up on the porch and looks onto the house door to let us know he is all done. Anything to do with Hunting, dummies, pheasant feathers, Laying our hunting clothes sparks Rocky up. Rocky gets most excited if I bat the tennis ball swinging a baseball bat. He will still chase that kind of ball the best. Or if there is a group of people sitting in chairs in the back yard , Rocky will go after the ball alot longer than if it is just myself alone playing ball toss with him. I also find on cooler days Rocky has alot more energy and lasts alot longer chasing tennis balls. Hot weather just zaps his energy. I always water Rocky down if I am going to take him on a walk on a hot day and shoot for early morning or late evening when the sun is not so high in the sky. Rocky is maturing and is not the zoomy puppy GSP he used to be, but I am going to enjoy and accept his middle years he is in now and golden years when that time comes.

Ya I always make sure there is water available. Plenty of water to carry with me and almost always a creek, pond or slough for him to wade in. So overheating isn't a problem. He just gets so bored. I'm thinking 2 possibilities. 1, Get another one :). 2, Take some pigeons and drop them around him and work on stop to flush. Hopefully that will perk him up and keep him interested to run.
