my new owners are VERY worried about the hot spot on my right wrist. i first began licking on this spot months ago when i was left at the kennel by my last owners. i do pretty good listening to my new owners when they are home and dont lick much....BUT when left alone i cant help myself and i chew off any bangage put on. i always want to make my owners happy and dont even mind my cage but i dont want to be left alone with a white cone on my neck. it reminds me of the kennel i stayed in. what else can i do ???

Does the vet know about this ?

How old is the dog ?

Why does he have a cone on ??

I'm no specialist..sounds like a A parasite ? ACNE ? or just....nervous chewing....

You RESCUED this guy RIGHT ?

We really feel for your stress, sometimes it takes  awhile to get over STUFF..  You've come this far, HANG IN THERE

Have you tried spraying bitter apple on the bandage (don't spray it on the sore directly, but only on the bandage).  Sometimes that will deter the dogs from licking/chewing the bandage.  Bitter apple can be found at any pet store and does not hurt the dogs, other than it tastes nasty.  One caveat, on some dogs this does not work at all. Just something that you can try.

Check with your vet and see about soaking the paw in warm water with just a bit (not much) of Epsom salt and baking soda bath salt (you can make this mixture with 1/4 tsp baking soda to 1 c Epsom salt then just put 1 tbs in a gallon of warm water.) Wrap it then do the bitter apple on the bandage. Sounds like Barley has developed a nervous licking problem (this is not uncommon with stressed dogs) so you might want to find a small salt lick at your local farm-supply store, and have Barley lick that instead of his paw. Note you do want to try to keep this sore unwrapped as much as possible, but until Barley relaxes and becomes more comfortable in your home, this habit may continue or even get worse. Trust and bonding comes with time, and Barley has already been through one abandonment, so it is going to take a while to understand that it is not going to happen again.

When you catch Barley licking, gently lift his head and tell him "no" then give him something else to lick/chew on.. Once he licks the other object, then praise and pet him... see if you can redirect his licking chewing habit to something healthier than a sore spot on his foot.

You want to cure the cause not the symptoms.
Have you checked into worms? Some worms are harder to see then others and require testing for many months before they show their ugly heads. Giving a good wormer, one that takes care of several different worms, may be worth looking into. Bringing a stool sample to the vet once or twice a month is bothersome and costly. There are a few good online places to buy strong wormers at a decent price, if you thought this was the place to start.
In general hot spots are related to food alergies. Are you feeding the same food/brand as the previous people?
Altho, b/c of its location I would look elsewhere for the cause.

thanks for the help guys. my owners take me to a really nice vet but i wanted some input from friends as well. i did not know that some worms can cause me to lick my paw and its not just nerves !!! i am currently about to take my second hook worm dose.  i will lick off anything my owners put on it that tastes bad and chew off any bandage given enough time. my owner brought home an e collar today (cone). i hope he does not use it tomorrow !

Ok, I'm lost. You bought an electronic collar(shock collar) or a cone collar that goes around the neck?

ME TOO LOST....collar wise

The stuff the vet gave us....Hmmm I mean Charged us for  ( we bought a bottle to keep at home , cuz I was impressed    )....Bean really left her bandage alone for three days, anyway it is called   ATROPINE SULFATE..

Again it is for bandage  NOT direct contact

I hope stuff is settling down

"e collar" is the brand name of the cone use for deterent.  i wore the cone for a few hours today while my owners went to get haircuts. i did not mind the cone because i was tired and slept...it kept me from licking.

That is a beautiful dog....he appears to have sufficient hardware on

good luck and we are ALL here to help you....

Our dog will run away and just BOLT, coming back ON HER TERMS...we've had her almost two years...she was 18 months when we rescued her

Her main thing is ball playing....and IF we have a ball within sight or " her fave " the CHUCKIT....I HAVE COMPLETE

Control....so that aids in a training recall....FIND out what that dog responds to

BTW....I am sooooooooo NOT the person to give advice....just wanted to help a bit

GOOD LUCK

I really love my dog...to me thatis KEY
