We have decided to try and go do some grouse hunting with our 1.5 year old GSP. I don't expect to get much but hey might as well try and see how things go! Michigan season opens this Saturday for us and we have been told of a couple good spots to try. So we will see. The dogs got to do some "hunting" yesterday for about an hour. They found some old scents but no birds this time. This was the first time taking them off a preserve to hunt so they did well and my boy knew where to look for the birds.

Any suggestions when grouse hunting as far as best time of day to go etc.?

Thanks!

I live in northern MN, grouse heaven. Morning and evening are definately the best times to hunt. Try to find clover and gravel, that is where the birds will be. Grouse love catkins, little long skinny green pine cone looking things. The grow on bushes and the grouse go wild. Edges of swamps will hold grouse when it gets cooler. Once snow stays on the ground it's not really worth your time to freeze for the few birds you get. Hope this helps, happy trails.

Swanky, where in N. MN do you live? I am near Baudette, formally lived in E. Grand Forks.

I'm actually on the North Shore now in Lutsen. I'm originally from the Iron Range, but i hunt deer and everything up by Roseau.
