That would be the behavior in which the dog hesitates before vigorously attempting
to catch the bird - thus causing the bird to flush in order to escape from the dog.

I did restrict consideration to young dogs didn't I?  that would be the area of
interst to me.

 

 

Jere I have 2 young setter littermates here for training, very good breeding. One dog has shown strong natural point from the start and is almost finished steady to W/S/K.. The other dog has pointed natural very few times.. He has been a interesting study for me, acts sorta like the early PL's   He has flushed a lot of birds but still shows very little natural point, quick flash point is about all I see in him. He is doing better now but will never be a top notch dog like his littermate.. I study and try to learn as much as I can from this type dog, don't know if it is worth it or not but I still enjoy learning from the dogs. I have had cockers, boykins and some other flushing breeds that will start to flash point if they are worked on good flying JH quail or chukar, it just happens with some of them. I think they stop in order to get a accurate location on the quail before they try and catch it. Hope you are well.. I still read this list but don't have much time to post, to many dogs to get worked and it is still way to hot, 98 today with the heat index.
