Maud phoned from the mountains almost weeping out of happiness. Yesterday Briz was trialled and continued to today's finals. Today she succeeded and got a prize of some value. The value will not be disclosed until at the evenings banquet since this trial is the main trial of the year for at least the Swedish  English setter club...or perhaps the entire Swedish club for British birddogs....doesn't matter which actually. Maud has worked so hard for that merit and finally it happened, despite the poor prerequisite (read "Why we fail" on Torsti's corner).

Briz has been different since she did not become 3 years old until she was 5 years old! Today when she is 8 years old she is actually only 5 or something.....well, I've heard of other similar dogs and here we have one more.

Maud is on her way home and sends you all a "Thanks a lot!" for the congratulations!

BTW the judge was from Holland. I did not know the judges from down in Europe also judge mountain trials although lowland trials are a big thing down there. Well, what do you know? However he actually knew Maud from her gundog photos that apparently are spreading around the world. One day she perhaps will be invited to say France to photograph their trials - and perhaps get paid for it :-))

Briz slow retrieve was on a cold, laid out bird, and that dropped her from a 1:st prize to a second. The gun did not shoot Briz bird because it escaped in a difficult and dangerous angle. Briz was steady to flush but then she wanted to investigate the ground for further birds, something that is perfectly OK and advisable during hunting and in trials in Norway but not in Sweden. Another difference is that in Norway, like in Sweden,  the dogs have to make a special retrieving test before they can start in open stake but that is only done once and the dog gets a certificate if it passes the test. This certificate is then valid during the dogs lifetime. The difference is that in Norway a dog do not have to fetch in a trial but the trial is finished for the dog when it is steady to flush. Hence only starting pistols are used in Norwegian trials. If the dog is steady to flush and then starts to investigate the ground for more bird it is a plus point for the dog in the final judgement. More like real hunting, actually.

The Norwegian system is discussed in Sweden. Since it is a fact that it is very difficult to train a hot birddog to retrieve cold game just after a lovely live bird has been flushed, too many otherwise good dogs are put out from the trials. Few people want a puppy from a bitch and dog that do not have any field trial merits, no matter how good they are. Hence a lot of good genes are put out from the circulation. I hope they adopt the Norwegian rules, if for no other reason but for animal well-fare. How many setters and pointers are tortured when unskilful owners try to force train them to fetch cold game?

Re: [working-gundog] Briz did it!

Torstie, what a shame, any dog that has been hunting and had a bird shot to its point, (or in this instance was the impression given to the dog) is not going to pick up a cold bird, when the dog knows it must be a freshly shot bird it should be looking for!

Well, those are the Swedish rules. In one of the winner stake trials on the same place the same days all 11 starting dogs were put out for different reasons. No dog did a good enough job to be placed and that means that Briz job in open stake was as good or better than what the 11 winner stake dogs did. The winner stake judge was a Norwegian woman who is know to favour dogs that works like true hunting dogs. In order to be placed (=given a award) in winner stake the dog must work good enough to equal a 1:st price in open stake :-)) The 1:st prize in open stake is in other words the highest quality award a dog can get. The other part of the winners stake is pure competition.

The Dutch judge that judged Briz happens to be a person high up in the in the FCI hierarchy down in Europe so Maud is very happy that this well known judge gave Briz the award. Of course he had to judge according to the Swedish rules. Most dogs that were put out in open stake was due to an even lousier retrieve than Briz did so the fetch of cold birds in the vicinity of a covey of warm, live ones is a real problem with the British pointing dogs. I do not know how German pointers would handle it, they might be less "hot" and hence not that focused on the real stuff. I do not know, it's been years since I saw a German pointer....I do not even remember where it could have been....

Briz was also the calmest dog in Maud's party, no whining together with "The Pointer Sisters chorus" or pulling the lead between the runs. So Maud has all reasons to be pleased and proud. Now she and Briz are aiming for a 1:st prize in open stake and after that they can start in winner stake some day.

That's life in the trial circus folks :-)))
