If the dog REALLY "likes" the retrieve game (the run out, grab ...), that can be very effectively used to convince the dog to train the trainer to give it another retrieve by properly executing the delivery ritual. I briefly mentioned this strategy earlier and Ken Middleton wrote about using it to train a pointer to "sit" (lay flat on the ground from a full run) on command quite some time ago on this list. With my younger Lab. I used it to develop a very nice remote sit used in connection with casting signals for execution of "blind" retrieves as well as to develop an acceptable delivery to hand. Rather than coddleing or even conditioning the dropping of the dummy as a "solicitation to play" Clem mentions, with this approach one shows the dog an acceptable (to the handler) alternative and the dog enthusiastically uses that to gets what it wants. This is what I mean by "dog trains the trainer." One must be consistent in his insistence and rewards for this to be effective.
