> ~~~~~~~~~~~~ > You lose the bet. Glad I lost the bet:-) Often you do end your emails with something fascinating as a promise and then we never hear of it again! I find a Lab is completely different in its attitude to retrieving compared to a GSP. To a retriever it is all, to a GSP it is only part, so they tend not to be so keen, but are efficient. > competitive events if I provide the dog with a ceremonial, and therefore > desirable, finish to the delivery after a retrieve. This is how I have trained Drift and as I have said before, when we are alone or with my two GSP's he will do it perfectly. With other dogs in company he will come so far and then jinx away and to make matters worse when I do get him to come close to me, he hangs onto the retrieve! > > One of the solutions with non-retrieving dogs is to slap your chest and > have the dog leap up, plant its front feet on your chest and present the > retrieved game to you face to face. I have now decided to be more relaxed about the retrieve and today have taken out a very exciting rabbit dummy and he has brought it to hand every time, but I averted my gaze, smiled and didn't ask for anything formal in the hope this will work when we do it in company tomorrow! > have a lot more to say about shaping the delivery to hand as a technique > to polish retrieving all the way back to the initial 'fetch' command if > you are interested. Yes, I am interested as I am sure others will be. Having my dog bring back the retrieve, without formally sitting and presenting as he can already do, I hope can overcome the "play/jealousy" with other dogs and I can then polish up the retrieve again at a later date. Each evening in the house, we sit together, him facing me and do a "hold and give", so the basics will be there. Sonia
