So we're starting off with the first GSP of our adult lives. . . . we have an amazing puppy with all the good stuff in the gene pool. . . . and we want to make sure we do our best by him.  He's still only 11 weeks old, but always in front of me is that NAVHDA natural ability test!  (first things first, right?).  I'm curious to hear from those of you who are seasoned NAVHDA participants, what you consider to be the optimum age for doing the natural ability test?

Any and all advice is appreciated!  Thanks!

I always want to test as soon as the dog has a 4 field search (that is usually the last thing to come on) they are swimming at 8 weeks weather permitting, and pointing then also. then lay off until they are large enough to run trough the tall stuff, by lay off, just mean don't put them on a bunch of birds, still walking through the the fields and swimming. I have a littermate to you pup, she already swims, points running the field. I am not sure if I will run her this fall or wait until spring. I have other dogs to run this fall but she might run. A friend has a littermate also, he plans on running this fall. Just take it easy and have fun. PS I have pics of your pups half brother posted under the pics thread and autobacker thread.

Thanks, Trey! As a novice, it's hard to know how much exposure to give him for na. I don't want to over-work with him or under-work with him. I can't wait to see pictures of June. . . but I don't dare ask as I haven't managed to post any of Doc yet either! I tried to look for the photos on the threads you mentioned, but couldn't find them. Where should I look?

Johnnys mom is VC Odyessy's Hustlin Kate MH. Hum, the pm's usually come through, I can't figure out how to change the email on here though. Did you hit the pm or the email button? You definelty don't want to overdue the na stuff, they usually show the best when it is a true na test, the dog has been exposed to all, but not 'trained'. JMO. I will put a pic of June up on photobucket and get it on here. She is really getting to be a pita!

Kate looks to be a great dog--I've heard good things about her!

Yep--I hit the email button instead of the pm button. I used the pm button this time. Sorry about that.

Doc seems like a horse galloping through the house--he's grown so much in the last 2 1/2 weeks. He weighed 14 1/2 lbs at 9 1/2 weeks, so I'm interested to see how much he'll weigh when we take him in on Monday.

I like to test my pups before 1 year.
My male was tested at 11 months.
Our older female was tested at 9 months, and I have a pup that will be tested on Aug. 23rd who will be 7 months when I test her.
