Today, was a very big day.  Not only did I send my youngest off to Kindergarten, I also dropped Otto off with our trainer for a six week intro to birds/guns course.  It will be very quiet on the homefront for awhile...

Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone here has left their dog at a kennel for an extended period of time?  I'm just wondering what it will be like when we bring him home after having lived the kennel life.  Will he have forgotten his "house manners"?  Or will he slide right back into the swing of things around here?

I miss the little bugger already. *sigh*

We have many house dogs here for training, I think they go home and fall back into the routine quickly. If it is a mature male that is marking they may need a reminder or two, but they are quick to appreciate being home again for the most part.....

Our first GSP Poge, we boarded him at a kennel when we would travel and couldnt take him. Sometimes when picking Poge up from the kennel , he would smell like pee and we would give him a bath. Once in our house Poge would blend right back into the routine. He would sleep solid in his dog bed in our bedroom and be glad he was back home. No problem with him doing his business in the house. Poge was very good GSP and an excellent hunting dog!!!

The only time I have clients comment is if the dog that is here (at the kennel) is a dog that is higher up the chain in the home 'pack', if it is away for 3 months, sometimes when they come home there is some shuffling around and posturing to get the pack order back to where it was before. I imagine if you had a pup at home that was very dominant and wanted that spot badly (leader) when the older dog came home you could have some problems. Other then that, house manners remain the same (they get to go 'out' a few times a day) some will go in there kennel and some will really try not to.

Oh, this is so good to hear.  I sent him away with the house training thing finally 100% and was hoping it wouldn't take more than a reminder or two to get him back on track when he returns.  And he's our only dog (for the moment), so no issues on the pack front.

Thanks!
