I'm new here, but have been "lurking" awhile. Anyway, We've been interested in the breed for sometime now and are finally ready for a pup. We are in the Twin Cities and are looking for a female pup. Anyone have any recommendations? Thanks!

What would you like to do with the puppy? :) That's one pretty standard question you are likely to get from most breeders? It helps focus which characteristics you would be most wanting, and getting matched up with the wrong kid. Welcome to the board, I think you'll find a lot of valuable information and expertise available here!

We are looking for a biking, rollerblading, swimming, boating, etc. companion. We're not hunters, but lead an active life and want a versatile, affectionate, fun loving pooch. We have had several sporting breeds in the past (labs, springers, a golden and a chessie) so we are very familiar with their energy and temperaments. We would love to rescue, but want to start out with a real young one, or a puppy.

Rescue can get you a youngster or puppy. The ones on the rescue sites are the ones that don't get immediately placed.

You could contact the GSP Club of MN about rescuing a puppy.  And if you decide to buy a puppy from a breeder, they could also give you some great recommendations.

You might also try Homeward Bound.  It's a mixed breed rescue, but they do occassionally have shorthairs available (there is one listed now, but he's 4 yrs old).   My mom recently rescued a dog from HB (not a shorthair, despite my best efforts to sway her), and she really liked working with them.

Good luck in your search!

Thanks! I e-mailed the rescue people and we'll see what they have to say.

There are some for sale up here near Lake of the Woods. Don't know anything about them but if you go to wiktel.com & then click on there want ads & then under dogs, she had e-mailed me that she has all her dogs for sale. I go to the cities often & could help with transport.

If we get another shorthair down the road, I'd love to get a puppy from Top Gun Kennels in IA. That said, I don't know if they sell to non-hunting homes. I've also heard really nice things about Willow Creek Kennels in Little Falls, MN. Again, they may not sell to a non-hunting home either. Might be worth giving them a call though. Even if you don't fit their puppy buyer requirements, they might be able to at least point you in the right direction.

Hmmmmm Tucker, I will have to talk to the man about that one, thanks for the offer! I will have to e-mail her. BTW is it common for breeders to not allow pups to non-hunting homes?

I think she will let these go VERY resonable, they just don't sell well up here. She also said she had one that was due with pups soon. let me know if you can't find it.

Barb got back to me late last night and said she had a 6yo female. She said nothing about anyone else she might have. Haven't had any luck with the rescue folks so far. I will just have to keep an eye and ear out.

Good News! Found a kennel in southern MN (Any Good Reason Kennel) that have a litter of late May pups. They meet my requirements and I meet theirs, so I put down a deposit! We will be getting our pup at the end of July! We are so excited. Thanks everyone for your help!
