Definitely not to old!! Get him on LOTS of birds, treat him as a puppy though - his bird "mental level" will be that of a young inexperienced dog, exactly what he is!! Word of caution though....at this age he can run a lot further/faster than a young puppy, try to keep him from catching the birds or you may have a hard time breaking him, chasing some at first is OK if you can stop him & he cannot catch the birds.
Make sure you get good flying birds (pigeons are a good start), or work on wild if possible, or use a check-cord.
If you plan on using a e-collar, get one soon & start wearing it on him, but leave the transmitter at home for now. Get all you basic obedience commands down in the yard 100% BEFORE you ever use the collar. I suggest trying to find a local training club, pro trainer or NAVHDA club and joining to get help from some experienced people.
Good luck, hope this helps!!

We adopted Rocky at 12 months old who never hunted and trained him as a puppy learning the basics. Because of his speed and high prey drive we chose to start his first lessons using a dummy and pheasant scent, not a live bird. We also enrolled him in a basic obedience class to learn the basic commands and get socialized with other dogs. Then we went out to live game pheasant farms and introduced him to a live birds. Rocky learned very fast and progresses with every season.  Pheasant hunting for Rocky is like taking a child to Disney World. Ultimate happiness and it is fun for us to watch Rocky do what he was breed to do. Good luck and have fun training you one year old GSP!!!

I appreciate the advice I have no dog training know how as of right now so I am thinking maybe a professional trainer might be needed, I do not have any of the equipment that I have read about, What are some standard prices for training. I have done some research and it seems like 3 months is a safe bet on the length of time it is expected to take. Will this possibly take long due to his age or maybe less time.

The only time you cannot train a dog is while you are pitching dirt on it's grave. You GO mister!

Our "young" dog is 6 years old and this will be his first season hunting. NEVER is a dog to old!!!
I agree with Zodiak's statements. I tried VERY hard to do everything WRONG with our first dog. :-)
Learned from the mistakes and got help with the second dog!!!
