Ruger is now 7 months old and I had a few questions. First, I eventually want to get him neutured, I did not know when the best age to do that is? Second, I am looking to buy a shock collar for him, and didn't know which brands or models everyone recomends?

Thanks

I would wait until he is at least 18 months old for neutering.   I have a lab that was spayed early.  There are indications that early spay/neuter can also contribute to the incidence of osteosarcoma (bone cancer).  And believe me, if there is anyway to lessen the likelihood of your dog getting this terrible disease, I would do it.  I know I will never spay/neuter early, no matter what the vet tells. me.

On the e-collars.  I have always had the Tritronics brand.  Have had great service and they are very reliable. If you have never used one, please get some help on the correct way to use them.

Good luck with your puppy!

To add to what Roz said, some also believe that early spay/neuter causes issues with when growth plates close on dogs which leads to longer bones. Since the muscle growth is not controlled by the male and female hormones you end up with dogs that have longer legs and are more prone to soft tissue injuries. I wait until after my girls have gone in season at least once, but usually twice before spaying and with my boys I wait until they are 18 months to 2 years.

I also use TriTronics, but SportDogs also has some new and innovative new collars that look good too and I believe they are also very reliable. Check out gundogsupply online as they do a comparison and recommendation that I have always found very reliable. I too recommend getting help if you have never used an ecollar before. I also do not like to use an ecollar on my dogs until they are at least a year old. Also, the dogs must first understand the command you are training before and ecollar will help you. My experience is most dogs under a year are not at that level of understanding yet either.

I too would wait to 18-24 months if you feel OK handling him until then. Just don't underestimate the desire to mate ;)
I have a Sportdog and it has performed very well
