My 5yo male gsp had a seizure this morning, as far as I know the first one. He is acting about 90% normal afterwards. He has been to the vet for blood work and we are awaiting results. I talked to the breeder and they have no known history, in the parents or litter mates.

Is there anything to be done to help minimize the potential for more? I know that it may not happen again for years or it might happen again tomorrow. Just trying to educate myself and vent a little.

Try to figure out the trigger. That is easier said than done though. This sounds like it might be environmental as there is no history in his relatives. Think about anything that has changed, or that he might have come in contact with. Also, rule out any medical issues ( sound like you are already doing that).. The one thing you want to do is try to prevent any more seizures because the brain will learn the seizure pathway and the more seizures a dog has the more likely they are to have another one. That said don't stress about it either as your pup will pick up on that. Good luck. This may have been a once in a lifetime event too and you may not ever figure out what caused it. Seizures are tricky and every dog, or person for that matter, has a threshold for seizing. That does not mean they are epileptic. If something happens that causes the dog to cross their personal threshold, they will have a seizure. They may never hit that threshold again.

I just spent some more time talking to doctors about this as my mother who is 81 had a seizure for the first time in the hospital recovering from hip surgery. The doctors ran all the tests and came up with nothing, so they are now guessing that the seizure may have been triggered by her stress from the surgery and her age. Anyway I found out allot about what they do and do not know about seizures.
