anyone ever attempt shed hunting with their gsp?  I have been walking my pup in the woods alot lately and yesterday I decided to look for sheds while we were out.  Here my pup must have already had that on his mind when he came running up to me proud as ever with a shed in his mouth! Throughout the day he found two more and two skulls !  No prior training, just did it?

If there are feathers or bones anywhere near...my girl will find them. Their instincts are pretty strong...training only hones them even more.

Deer legs, he's always bringing them back.

Haha. Great to hear. It's my first Gsp. Always wanted one. He's 4 months. Best dog I've ever owned. He's doing amazing with his bird training. But the sheds are just a plus. I happened to have treats in my pocket and rewarded him for his finds. Definitely going to keep this up! It just amazes me how smart these dogs really are. No book or words can really explain it.

We're planning to train our girl (GSP puppy, "Wren") to hunt sheds, it sounds like fun and I've never met a dog who didn't love a thinking job on a walk.

Even at 9 weeks our girl obsessed with search games and covering ground. We bought her an antler for a chew outlet but now will reserve it for training. I've talked with Steve Waller of Cabin Creek and we plan to bring her there to gain a good solid base. Right now we're "playing" (read training, but she's having fun) on some basics like fetch and seek.

Just trying to keep up with our GSP

sounds awesome!!..yeah im just going with it...he seems to be picking it up on his own and with me rewarding him with finds he loves it!...as long as he gets a reward everytime for doing something he realizes thats what he wants to do more than anything in the world!...love this breed

Mine find all kinds of bones when we walked. They have also started finding the kill sights of coyotes. I will be easy to get them finding sheds if you reward. Eventually you might also pair a command like find. Let them sniff a shed and send them off with the find command. You might even plant a few for them to find so you dog will be successful and you can reward him.

I trained Dax to find sheds, and he will find them 100% in our yard or house. Our property has tons of trees shrubs woods and landscaping so theyre not easy to find. When I take him shed hunting with me in the woods he will find antlers, but usually wont bring them to me. He will stay focused on finding sheds in the beginning...but if we jump a rabbit or other critter its pretty much game over and he's too focused on finding critters than looking for boring antlers haha. This video is one of Dax when he was about 10 months old when we first started expanding our practice hunts to the entire yard.
