I have always had and always been advised to let girlies have 1 season before they are spay. I have had 3 female dogs over the years and always done it 3 months after.

However, when I registered at the vets and gave the details the woman was rather alarmed that I was waiting to get Kassi spay and then told me that getting them done before 1st season reduces the risk of breast cancer (not sure if she was talking about me or the dog lol).

So, before or after first season?

One of the vets at my clinic also tries to alarm and guilt me into changing our mind. I really could have gone either way, but my husband held firm on waiting. In all the research we read it truly seems to be a 50/50 debate for now. I say do what feels right to you.

Kerry-anne, I think so many vets recommend the 6 months since they know most people won't be diligent with a dog in heat. Once you explain that your breeder has recommended waiting until after this first heat, I think they'll back off. (In fact, I have had heard cancer was reduced by waiting after a heat cycle, so I guess it depends on who did the research.

Yeah i thinks push the spay and neuter thing before maturation just to help prevent unwanted breeding... just stand firm be confident in your decision and your vet will see u r responsible and will back off... mine never questioned my decisions..

Thanks. I have no issue standing firm. I already told her it was my decision. I'm not one to let people "bully" me. I have actually already been warmed that the male vet in there is a bit pushy so to speak. He likes to force his opinions on people. He can try but i'll soon tell him to wind his neck in and put him back in his box. I'm English and not one for keeping quiet lol

Also vets may be good on the medical side, but most know very little about specific breed issues and the reproductive side of dogs. If you talk to vets that specialize in reproduction it is a much different conversation. I agree that most err with the idea that most owners are clueless and don't watch their dogs when in het, and in their defense they see allot of irresponsible owners and clueless owners. Once they get to know you, I bet the conversations will change.
