Had the thrill of spotting a rooster strutting along the road near Island Lake Illinois on the way home from work today. He was near the corner of N Darrell and W Bonner. It's been Years since I have seen any, and so far from any preserves (although I think Chain O' Lakes still does a put-'n-take). Exciting to see. Maybe there is some hope yet for Northern Il!

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when they pick-up, and deilver to hand a bird that they pointed, and you shot. - Todd

Years back I gave a Hen & Rooster Phez I had grown from day old to a friend. She had some chickens in her barn with her horses. In any case they ended up having babies. Chickens did eat the babies. My point those phez hung out there like chickens & would go out and fly around the pasture. Always coming back for the easy meal. But they did have young there. (But never survived but possibly could have)
What are some of the strange places people have seen phez ?

That's awesome. I saw the rooster again this morning. Makes me wonder if it is cage-raised, and is just lost. Hope a Coyote doesn't catch wind. Haven't seen any hen out there either yet. Just strutting about on a small rise near a retention pond. Plenty of cover around. Dumb thing will probably starve.

Don't know about strange places, but we frequented a farm that raised their own pheasant in Michigan (where we started club-type hunting). The owners biggest complaint is that when it rained they would all go out and stand looking into the sky. Dumb birds would drown themselves! He had to go in and clean out the dead ones after every significant rain storm!

I remember a friend telling me maybe 15 yrs ago he saw a phez on the NY side of the George Washington bridge heading north toward Yonkers but close to the bridge. I think more people do try to raise gamebirds & they probably release them or they escape . I just got my gamebird license renewal in the mail yesterday . For years I paid like 15. 00 this year it went up to 60. what an increase ! Little venting ! As long as the money stays in the Fish & Game fund I can accept it .

Well, Yes, and no.  That may have been the ONLY rooster in Northern Illinois...  I occasionally see them around game farms - McGaw, and our club near Hebron.  Occasionally near Bull Valley as well (there was a hunt club near where I live in Lake in the Hills).  Mostly they are raised birds that have been released, or escape.  Problem in Northern Illinois is the clean farming, and encroaching on breaks, along with fox, and coyote (coyote more recently).  The lack of cover gives the birds little chance of survival.

This bird was on private property near a dairy farm.

Correction to my vent : Yesterday in reading my license renewal it appears the new license Fee is $60. for five yrs. So I am saving money. Good idea who ever came up with it. Generate more revenue up front & less paper work. I opened it & saw the Fee first & said "aw shucks" ! Yesterday while going over it in it's entirety i came to realize I am actually benefiting........ That doesn't happen to often. Also to the people who have the room to have some birds on hand. It's a lot of fun & the pup likes it also !

So, there must be someone raising them around that area. About a week ago, I saw another rooster. Yesterday, there were 10 or more strutting through the corn stubble. Very cool to see, but just kinda confirms in my mind that they are released. Still, maybe...

Who knows, maybe a "wild" population will get established...
