Firstly, i'm wondering how Kassi's weight compares to the average 7/8 month old female pup. She is 32lbs. That doesn't sound so small but she seems tiny. I'm almost certain that she's about the same size as Baira was at 4/5 months.

I feed Acana. Leos is almost 2 and on adult, Kassi is almost 8 months and on Puppy and Junior.

Now, my question is............should I keep Kassi on the Puppy and Junior or switch her to the adult?

I switch Leos at 10 months and would probably switch Kassi at 10 months too but I am wondering if I should keep her on it a little longer as she is so tiny. It took her AGES to adjust to it and she's now doing really well on it. I'm sure it won't take her as long to adjust to the adult as it's also grain free. Before she went from soe absolute rubbish to Acana.

The house is coming together now, almost all unpacked. It's been a busy few weeks.

I was just looking at your picture of Leos and Kassi on facebook. She really is a little thing isn't she? I think she may just be a small female. Raz is 40lbs soaking weight while Bo is usually around 70lbs so there is quite a size discrepancy between the two of them as well.

Different lines will be different weight so if the dogs have different backgrounds they will mature different.

I like to keep a SMALL or TINY amount of excess weight on a growing puppy just to make sure I know they are getting the nutrition they need. So as long as your puppy isnt overweight or too skinny you will be fine.

If you can post pictures of your puppy at a stand sill (Birds eye, left, angle, etc) it would help gauge much better.

There is no need to switch the food if she is carrying good weight. Puppy food on these active dogs is even better than adult food IMO. The extra protein and fat is good for an active dog but even better is the extra glucosamine that's in there to help with bones and joints. If the dog is starting to get over weight or is done growing then make the switch to adult. At 10 months they are not done growing.

Thank you...............small typing error. I switched Leos at 12 months not 10.

She's not skinny...........I can sometimes see a rib and if I do I give her some extra food but she's just so tiny. When I bought her she was 4 months old. The lady said the whole litter was small (but not early). I saw both parents and both looked well and a "normal" size. When I saw her I thought maybe i'd misread and that she was maybe a small 3 month old not 4 as she looked more like 2 months.

Perhaps she's not that much smaller than average. I can't compare her to Leos I know as he's male and a big male at that so I compare her to my old female but thinking about it she was above average size for a female.

I'll get some photos of her tomorrow and measure her too.

Ryan is right about the puppy food. If you check the protein to fat ratio on a good puppy food and then on a good high performance adult food they will be almost identical. In fact I took a trip one time and forgot the dog's food. When I stopped to get some I couldn't get their food in adult, but could get the same brand puppy. I just bought the puppy and even in looks you couldn't tell they difference. They also did not have any stomach problems with the switch. If she is doing good I would leave her on it. Although I imagine it is a pain to have to get two different dog foods. So if that is an issue then by all means switch. Either way she should do fine. As for her size that is more about genetics than food.

Hi there!  I've also had questions about the weight of my puppy.  Luna is 8 months old now, and she is roughly 70lbs if not more by now :o/.  When we brought her home at 8weeks old, she was already 20lbs, and she did get pretty bow-legged for about 2 weeks during her 3rd month.  I was a little concerned with her bone development and thought she might be getting too heavy for her own bones, and we did not overfeed her at all.  I have accepted that she's a BIG girl, and by no means "fat".  Here she is at 8 months, this was taken last week.  She is anything but petite!

@Mareezee her body looks just as it should IMO, she must just be a big girl. Wow, at 8 months Bella weighed 42 pounds. Now, she ranges between 49 and 52 (was 52 last week at a vet visit, her highest weight yet!). People comment all the time on her being petite, yet we have encountered males her same size or smaller. I find her to be average. I would say Luna is definitely above average. Has she been spayed?

@Keanmu - Sounds like Kassi will be a petite thing. I'm no pro on sizing, but like I just mentioned, people comment quite often on Bella being a "small" GSP and she probably weighed 39-42 pounds in the 7-8 month period. Again, I find her less petite and more average. All of her sisters are smaller than she is, and she was the runt. Though, much of her weight is muscle.

@Keanmu - Gretel will be 2 years in March, and she fluctuates between 38 and 39 lbs. She's a very petite GSP but is a ball of fire.
