My Dobe broke his toe last month.  We're training for SAR.  Can't wait for it to end so we can get out and do things again.

Wishing a speedy recovery for you guys! Nothing worse than having to keep the guys at bay when you know they thrive on activity. Hope it goes by quickly for you!

Thanks, its really hard on him being kenneled. The vet gave me some sedatives to help but they made him shake all the time when he was on them so I had to take him off of them. He broke the bone completely in half so it could be a long recovery..

The sedative was probably Ace. When Ringo was neutered the vet gave me Ace to help keep him calm. It worked in reverse with Ringo. I spent 8 hours walking him slowly on leash. I have had better luck using Benadryl because it makes them sleepy. So you might want to ask the vet. Shorthairs are also tough and so stoic about pain too. Good luck.

If Tucker likes the water you could take him for a swim after he gets his splint off. Some citys have indoor swimming for dogs. Hanna was out swimming two days ago in the lake. Temps are freezing in the night and around 45 in the day. Didn't keep the dogs from swimming. Good luck with this bad break

It is a pretty bad break. Basically what would be his ring finger on his right paw has the bone farthest from the tip of the toe broken in half and offset and the top half is angled out about 15 degrees making his whole toe crooked. I'm fairly surprised they said we didn't need to do surgery to pin it back in place but the guy who gave the opinion on it is the orthopedics specialist at Iowa State University's vet school so he knows what he's talking about. The vet recommended cutting his food back while on crate rest and that has really calmed him down, less calories means less extra energy. Only two more weeks in the splint but crate rest for at least another month..

Kaido broke his toe too, and Maybrie is recovering from surgery. Keeping them kenneled is crazy tough! After 3 weeks, Kaido pulled a pillow into his crate through a tiny hole in his cage, a hat, a sock, and theend of the arm on our leather couch. Oh, and he ate all 4 splints that I made for him with sturdy orthoglass, WITH his cone on! He also chewed up 2 cones! That was week 4 I believe....maybe week 5. Don't remember too well. During this time, he also learned to chew up his bed,,,he chewed up 2 beds at 150 each. He now sleeps on a cheap 15 dollar queen size comforter! At 6 weeks, I finally put a super hard protective splint on him, and took him running along side my bike! Right or wrong, it was that or the insane asylum for both of us!! Kaido's to was broken in the same place as your dog's, however, we were fortunate that, A..he was a puppy, and B., it was his right rear 5th digit, non weight bearing toe. The vet said it would heal pretty much no matter what we did, so I chose the sanity route! Thankful it wasn't a weight bearing toe! Wishing your pup a speedy recovery and that sanity stays at 100% between now and then!
