I want to train with my 4 year old GSP, Reagan, for a half marathon.  I just wanted to find out how far you guys have been able to jog with your GSP.  The furthest we have ever run her is 6.5 miles. I feel like she would be able to run further but don't want to push her too hard.  Is 13 miles going to be too far for her, we would obviously be working up to the distance.

Another question... my boyfriend and I are adding a male puppy to our family in a month. SO EXCITED!!! (not going to bring the puppy on runs don't worry) But, we are worried about the introduction and the first month.  We have waited to get another GSP until we felt Reagan was more secure and socialized.  We adopted her from a shelter about three years ago when she was a little over one.  She hadn't been exposed to anything and was therefor scared of everything including other dogs.  She now goes to daycare at least twice a week and socializes fine.  We are worried because she has never lived with another dog and we do know she is possessive of toys and can be food aggressive (only with dogs not people). She is our work in progress and has already made so many improvements since we got her and we are hoping we can work past these things eventually and want to make sure we go through all the correct steps in order to avoid any big problems.

Any advice for the introduction and especially the first month would be great.  We will be moving about two weeks before he comes home, which we are worried will make Reagan insecure for a while.

Thanks so much!!!

Some pictures of Reagan!!

As long as she is in the proper shape 13 miles is nothing.

Our dogs cover twice that in a day of hunting easy.

The jogging shouldn't be a problem as long as you work her up to it. Keep an eye on her feet to make sure she has no issues with her pads wearing or getting sore.

As for the intro I always do mine in my backyard and I keep the puppy on the leash so she doesn't overwhelm Reagan. Also get into a routine with them and especially at feeding time. Be sure Reagan gets her food first and don't let the puppy bother her a dinner time. Also don't let Reagan get the puppies food either. In force that they have to stick with their own bowls. Also don't neglect Reagan. Be sure you give her equal time and do something with her special . I suspect that Reagan will love her new buddy.

Baira (RIP) used to come out horse riding with me. I think we did approx 15 miles every other day, sometimes 20 miles, very occasionally more. The days in between i'd be schooling so she'd run laps around the field surrounding the arena lol. Probably did a fair few miles then too.

We did work up to it though, over about 6-8 weeks and I didn't run her hard until she was 1 year old.

like others have said she'll be good as long as she is worked up to it...we routinely hike 1/2 and full days covering from 10-15 miles (one hike we covered 25miles) When running with the bike, 6-10 miles is average for us but have done a 20 miler before. With introducing the pup to your dog, I would do it in an open place or even better some place new that isn't Reagan's "territory". Most dogs do very well with puppies and give them waaaay more freedom than they would a grown dog. Good luck!

We have some good info on this.
Firstly, we also run alot of 1/2 marathons. We have run our mature dogs out to about 1.5 hrs, which is my normal 1/2 marathon time. No problems.
With the puppy introduction. We recently lost our 14.5 yr old & then decided to get a pup to partner our 13yr old (Banjo) who hadnot been well socialised for some time.
We attended puppy training classes for about 3months to get him used to puppies being in his face. When we picked up the pup, we did the introduction at the local dog training place. Banjo is very protective of me, so I was out of sight in a room watching through the window. My wife then walked Banjo along while someone else had the puppy & they kept the pup in check & waited for Banjo to show interest.
When he did. Lots of praise, keep feeding him & give him more attention & ignore the pup a little. When all was good I appeared & played with Banjo.
When comfortable, we all went home in same car.
By the end of that day, they were asleep on the same bed. 6 weeks on, they have their moments.
The introduction needs to work, or hard times are ahead.
Let us know how you go.

Thanks for the advice. Reagan is our first dog... Our families have always had dogs but she is our first one on our own. She is also our first gsp ever and we have had many rough times since we got her. But she is finally turning into such a fun and goofy dog and is no longer scared all the time!! The little guy we get in a month will be our first puppy so we definitely have more to learn!! I am going to read as much as I can before we pick him up to hopefully avoid some mistakes!!!

The good thing about shorthairs s they are great dogs to learn with as they are very forgiving of our mistakes.

So puppy came home today ..... Now named Cody!!! Reagan is completely ignoring him. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Where do I go from here? She is still getting tons of attention because we want to make sure she isn't jealous.

Patience. The ignoring is not unusually and Reagan will come around in her own time. Don't force it. I would keep doing what you are doing.
