My dad adopted a GSP from the pound a few years ago. He is about  2-3 years old and we don't know how he acts around small animals. But he is definitely very attentive and whenever he is outside he is always staring at birds, etc. (We had a bird nest in our tree in the backyard this past spring and he kept trying to jump at it.) I moved back home in May of 2011 with my cat and have kept her in my room ever since. We have introduced them to each other only a few times and for very short periods, but I'm afraid to leave them alone together. But it's not fair to keep my cat in my room all the time so we're finally taking the next step. Can anyone offer any advice to ensure a smooth transition? Are there any warnings or precautions we should be aware of? (Also, we have a yellow lab and the GSP and her get along very well.) Thanks guys!

The biggest thing is getting your dog to understand that the cat belongs and is "yours." Shorthairs are small animal sharp so you are fighting that instinct. The fact that your dog and the cat have met and I assume did ok is good. The other important thing is that the cat has a place to escape to. Take it slow and you should be ok. I had two cats up until about a month ago when I lost my oldest kitty, and 4 shorthairs and have had no issues at all. Now strange kitties do not fare as well.
