Ok, so I successfully used an e-collar on Baira. Barely ever had to use it and she always respnded when I did. I am currently training the puppy, Kassi (7 months) and she's been wearing it out but not done anything with it yet.

Leos on the other hand has started to ignore me, the beeb and the shock. I call, then call and beep, then call beep and short shock, I then call beep and long shock. Nothing, he just ignores me and the shock. He trained well with it and I very rarely had to even use the beep let alone the shock but now even with the shock on it's highest setting (it's been tested so I know it's working) he just ignores it and me.

He was in a wooded area just now, I gave him a long shock on high (after he ignored me a number of times), I even saw his shoulder flinch and he moved his head slightly................ nothing. It just doesn't bother him enough to make him stop what he's doing and come back. He stands and takes it and continues with what he's doing. I am getting very frustrated with him. It gives a heck of a shock but it just doesn't bother him.

I need some advice please as I can see this becoming a problem.

Both dogs are ALWAYS rewarded when they return to me.

I am wondering if i need to go back to tether training him.

First, what kind of collar do you have? I have one of my girls that when she was young she would just blow right through the highest level on some of the collars out there. That said, I don't use a beeper on a collar. My dogs do not get a warning at all. They either come or they get the shock. You are teaching them to ignore you on your first call because they know the next thing is a beep, etc. So that is problem one that I see. The second issue is there is response is not tied to stopping the stimulation. So when I train the recall with the ecollar (after months of training the recall in all types of environments, so they really understand the command), I turn them loose in an interesting environment (usually one of my favorite hiking areas) and let them get totally into exploring. I then will call them. If they come great, but I prefer them to ignore me so I can correct the behavior. They can't learn in this case unless they mess up. So when they ignore me I hit the button and hold it until they look back at me or start back toward me. Only then do I release the stim. If they ignore the stim I turn it up a notch and continue until I get the response I am looking for. I have never had this method not work and most of the time I only have to do this once. To determine the stim level to start with put the collar on the dog at the lowest setting. Keep turning it up until you get a flinch or indication that they feel it. That is the level you start at with your training.

Thanks for your response Bev and I see your point about not giving a warning. I have tried this on occassion but even with the shock on full power he just ignores it. I have a sportdog and i think its an sb120 but I have to get the box which is still packed somewhere because we've just moved in.

Leos was trained with it the way you said..........................try each shock level until you get a small response. He responded on about a 5 (out of 9) and has continued to go up through the levels and in time ignoring each as he goes.

I remember Baira responded on a level 2 and I never needed more than level 4 with her but the top level just isn't bothering him.

Bugsy has increased his tolerance on the collar too - when I started the training he responded to level 2 and our first 'working' level was 3. His working level is now 5-6 :(

I think considering the changes that Leos has been through restarting the training is necessary. Remember dogs don't generalize so if he was trained in a certain area, changing the area could be a factor. He is currently experiencing so many new smells etc that his brain and focus is elsewhere.

I suggest putting the check cord on him again and setting the levels back to a lower setting, and working on your commands with him and not letting him blow you off.

I have had to 'redo' certain commands with Bugsy because he started to not respond. That is his nature to do as he pleases more than to do what you ask so it seems reasonable to have to review things from time to time LOL

It's Bugsy's world...

I agree with Kpwlee. I would back track on his training as well. He is still a young dog and has been through allot of upheaval. And he is a male shorthair and they do have challenges with distractions. He needs to relearn he can't blow you off.
