Hi! My name is Stacey and I am from central North Dakota. I was finally ready for my first hunting dog last summer and after a lot of hard thinking (grew up in a Lab household) purchased a German Shorthair Pup. She is a Black/Black roan, AKC and NAVDHA registered (well, once I get the papers in) and is now 9 months old. Her name is Mossy, registered name will be Tailfeather's Mossy Oak Madchen, and she is something else. I took her out a few times this fall and she had an absolute blast. She did as well as a pup could do and honestly exceeded my expectations in the field. She is definitely a natural and I can't wait to see how she goes as she matures. We get pheasants in our fenced backyard (1 1/2 acres with lots of trees) and she has already brought me one live hen (ever so carefully) and the tailfeather off of a rooster. I guess that is all she managed to get before he took off because she didn't bring me the rest of the bird. She would also bring me drunk song birds this fall....they eat the fermenting crabapples, get drunk, and she would pick them up nicely and bring them to me. Craziness.  I'd have to go put them in the bushes when she wasn't looking. I joined the local NAVDHA chapter where we have learned a lot and I hope to start working on trialing her this summer. Her sire comes from NAVDHA lines and her dam from NASTRA lines. Breed-wise she has German lines. I had a guy last summer get quite vocal with me about her not possibly being purebred because "GSPs are brown!" LOL, he left that conversation enlightened.
Anyway, I am looking forward to a lot of learning and am glad I found this site. I'll get pics up this weekend! |

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when they pick-up, and deilver to hand a bird that they pointed, and you shot. - Todd |

Welcome Stacey! From a fellow black and white gsp.owner... Wendy is not a hunting hound... more of a couch potato... ... she does however love to stock her neighborhood squirrel and turkeys... have fun with your pup!!!! Can't wait to see your pics! |

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your shorthair. It sounds like you got a very nice hunting partner too. And yes, black is very much a legitimate color for a shorthair. I think the confusion comes in in that the GSPCA (the parent club for shorthairs in the US) writes the standard that is used by the AKC and I won't go into the history here, but black was written as a DQ in the US. Later that was changed a bit and now black is a DQ only in the conformation ring, but black shorthairs can compete in all other performance events within the AKC. There are other registries like UKC and IABCA in the US where black is not a DQ and can show in conformation. The US is the only country in the world that still carries black as a DQ in conformation. If you are member of the GSPCA, there is a vote coming up likely in March to change the standard and allow black in the conformation ring in the AKC. Also, for anyone interested who is a member and gets the Journal, the next edition will carry articles on for both sides, pro and con. I would encourage members to read the articles and vote, and if you are not a member consider joining . It is a great organization and does allot of work to keep the breed strong in the US. Plus you will meet allot of very nice people. For those interested in reading more about the history of the breed Georgina Byrnes book , Der Deusch Kurzhaar is excellent and if you can find it Herr Seiger's book, German Shorthaired Pointer, is also excellent. Herr Seiger's book is a translation so it is kind of hard to read, but is probably the best overall history of the breed around the world.

Texas Belle, thanks for the info. I hope they vote to drop the DQ on blacks in the ring. To me it's like the American Quarter Horse Association saying no black horses in the ring but we will take your money for registration!

| Adorable! Welcome to you both. I was talking with someone the other day who recently moved here with two GSPs from another state (one solid black), how up here you don't see any black coloring in full breds. He said it was quite common where he lived before. I would LOVE a black and roan. She's lovely and sounds like she is already showing her potential. You in turn sound comitted and very knowledgable, and will no doubt provide her a terrific home! |

Welcome to the forum. And, ftr, you'll find not everyone so gung ho on adding black to the AKC standard, just because they are pretty....but great way to get the discussion going....again.

It's not a matter of them being pretty, no where did I say that. it's a matter of them being just as much a German Shorthair Pointer as the liver colored. I don't know all the ins and outs of the whole situation, that's just my opinion. Having read the standards for the breed as set by the Verband fur das Deutsche Hundewesen and seeing that the German registry accepts and acknowledges the black GSP...I have to think, why not? I'd love to see a good reason. |
