We used a clicker when Bella was a puppy and she responded really well to it. As she got older and had better focus we fizzled on using it.

The concept behind clicker training is the ability to mark the behavior you want to reinforce and then shaping that behavior. You can use a clicker or even a word to do this type of marking. I would suggest you go to Amazon or Dogs.com and look for some books to read about clicker training. It is quite successful and useful in training. I do not use it exclusively, but I do use marking of behaviors in my training. I just use the word yes instead of a clicker.

This site is great as a resource
http://www.clickertraining.com/
You have to sign up but it's free
I use clicker training with Bugsy to burn off energy by doing free shaping and I have used it for more formal/serious training. He loves it and responds very well
There is a clicker gun dog yahoo group, I joined it but have very, very rarely read any of the posts.
As Bev said you are using the clicker as a marker so a word or other sound will do
Its all about the timing and consistency of the cue

It's Bugsy's world...

I did behavior consulting (recently stopped due to life balance) and part of the work I did was with a clicker. I think it's a great tool, but it is definitely possible to do it incorrectly.

If you wanted to apply clicker training to hunting, there is an online course you can take in addition to the list:

Mr. Milner also has a forum (like this one) where you can ask questions.

I find that I tend to drag out the /s/ in "yes," plus I say "yes" outside of training and don't want to inadvertently reward my dog. So I use "chk" (Like "chick" without a vowel) as my marker. I only use the clicker and verbal marker for very precise behavior. Sit, down, etc, aren't very precise, so the clicker isn't really necessary then.

Karen Pryor's "Don't Shoot the Dog" is a good foundation, but there are a ton of trick based and behavior-based books out there. Go look on Dogwise for details.

Hope this helps.
