(Noticed my error in the subject line: Should read, Has anyone tried Nutro Ultra? Wasnt't able to edit subject line) Binni is currently eating Nutro Ultra. I am having such trouble keeping weight on her. She always looks skinny to me. Of course, she is VERY active. Nutro Ultra is considered to be a "holistic" dog food. Not really sure what that means.... She was on Blue Buffalo for a few months when she was a pup and that didnt't work well for her. Tried her on Iams for a few months, but I didnt't feel that was a qauality dog food. She eats the Nutro Ultra and seems to enjoy it. Although, Binni will eat anything. She was just eating the stuffing out of her new toy She is very busy girl. I am wondering if this food is keeping her from putting weight on. So hard to decide what is best for her....

a local kennel operator who i trust told me they use nutro for their boarding & have had good experience with it, personally i prefer Wellness Core which is rated 5 out of 5 on dogfoodadvisor.com Wellness core is also grain-free which is nice for this breed. it's only $2 more than Nutro Ultra which is 4 out of 5, checkout dogfoodadvisor.com for the details on any food you choose. they really give you the nitty gritty about each brand. for the money, the Costco brand (Kirkland) food is VERY good (4 out of 5) my puppy had dry skin from the Diamond brand food the breeder was using & it only took a week of Wellness Core for her coat to visibly improve, it also feels must softer. i didn't think food could make such a difference until i saw it 1st hand

I can't use it for B due to allergies but I just looked it up and its fairly low protein and low fat - I imagine the calories are low too He had a terrible time when young keeping weight on and ate enormous amounts. I discovered that he ate less and did better with a higher protein, higher fat formula. Since switching to that I haven't bothered to look around much. His staple food is Orijen Fish, we have used others and he does OK but this is the one he eats the least of and does the best on so the high cost is mitigated to some extent. If I were you I would look at TOTW, Canidae makes some reasonably priced grain frees (they tend to be higher fat and protein content) and there are plenty others now too just transition slowly as the grain free's don't have the bulk that the Ultra does and will be much richer.

Costco has a few Nature's Domain (I think) which is very reasonably priced grain free - ours has a salmon and a chicken flavor

i've heard great things about Orijen, but i can't find it, plus it's ridiculously expensive

Thank you kpwlee. I am now wondering if the low protein and low fat has been causing Binni to look around for more food after she finishes her bowl. She is eating 4 cups a day and doesn't seem satified. (eats 2x daily) I will be looking into changing her food.

it is ridiculously expensive - we've been using it for years now - when it first became available in the US (its Canadian) it was the only grain free formula he could use due to his allergies I've tried about 6 now and he just does better on this and eats a lot less. Wellness Core Fish formula was good but he ate nearly 2 cups more a day to stay the same weight I've used TOTW again he eats more and his coat wasn't as good I've used Canidea Grain free, Acana, Before Grain, and another one I can't recall All good foods There are plenty of others but again his allergies severely limit what I can use

This site could help you out with researching dog foods. http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/ I too am looking at switching dog foods for my 9 month old GSP, so I understand your quandary!

I put Binni on a higher protein/fat ratio food and she seems to enjoy it. Hopefully we have finally found the correct food for her. Crossing my fingers that she puts a few pounds on.

I haven't tried Nutro. I have mine on Purina Pro Performance (name just changed to Sport) and canned Wellness Core. I had to changed about a year or so ago because the kibble I was using got too hard to get. I looked at allot of food, but wanted to keep the high fat and protein. The Performance had the highest in both areas. My dogs love it too and they are doing great on it. The plus for me too as a breeder is it is an all life stages food so puppies can be started right out on it. It is also easy to get and I get a discount as a breeder.
