Set out this morning with 14 degrees in the air to my favorite state park. This park gets hunted frequently, but is always a great walk. Just a few 100 yards into our stroll Adie lock point with Lucy backing in perfect postcard fashion. A pheasant took flight silently to the sky with the eary morning sun masking it's identity. Once I was able to distinguish the it

At least you were able to get out with the dog, and that's what it's all about. I know what you mean about hunting in the cold; the other day chukar hunting it was 9 degrees when we started walking.

The worst day of hunting is better than the best day at work.

Our season here in NY for grouse goes until the end of Feb. I usually put the gun away the end of Dec. We do go out and harrass the birds though Max loves it & I love watching him in the snow !

You're lucky to have a season go that late. I know I'd be taking full advantage of that.

....so in my laziness...I did not check my post here. I apologize. I wrote this from my phone and somehow my techowizardry decided to only post 1/2 of the content. To finish...In short...

We ended up coming across many Quail. Being that it is a public park it is hunted frequently and small game is far and few between. (In fact we were joined by a darling pair of beagles for a while until we could reunite them to their owner.) As our walked continued Adie and Lucy we obviously on the track of something; when suddenly I was standing in a cloud of Quail!!! I have hunted this park my entire life and I can honestly say in all that time I may have only seen 8 quail. I was in a moment of shock and confusion. Needless to say no shot was fired. I mentally regrouped and we gave chase. I had not expected to be shoot much on this endeavor so had just brought a small handful of cheap shells. (bad move) I had several of my limited shells malfunction during the best quail hunt of my life. (GRRR) Even with that we still came home with one rabbit and three quail.
