We're thinking about getting a dog door for Mihla so she can let herself in and out while we are gone during the day and I was looking for some advice/input from the group. We have a sliding glass door leading out to our 20x40 fenced back yard.

I'm not worried about her dragging anything in from outside, and I feel confident in her ability to dissuade any intruder from using the dog door to get into our house. There's a step down outside the sliding door, and my worry would be her tearing out the door to yell at a squirrel or sparrow and hurting herself on the step.

Anyone have any thoughts on that concern, or recommendations about brands, designs, or installation?

Thanks in advance,
e.

I don't have a dog door, but my mother does. When we are over my gang always tears out the dog door, but my mother doesn't have a step down. Not sure how they would handle the step. As for brand, they are all pretty good, but find one you like, and that is a popular brand. You will need to replace the flap at some point and it sucks to have to replace the door because you can't find replacement parts.

Even being home all the time, I doubt I've have a dog door. I have woods all around me. My patio door opens up onto the deck and has steps at the end leading to the fenced yard. I have had stray cats, neighbor cats, squirrels, possum, and several other drifters on the deck that I would not want coming into the house.

I was going to suggest similar to Nancy D just to make sure you 100% trust your pup not to just the fence in your absence. Most GSPs are more than capable of jumping a good variety of fences, it's just if they are motivated to or not. My dog trusts her boundaries when we are around, but as much as I trust her...I honestly wouldn't feel secure letting her anywhere outside completely on her own if we werent home to monitor periodically. but, maybe it is something you can build up to and start with small outings...just like you would of you were beginning to leave her uncrated at home. I suppose you could always block off the door for longer outings that may result in more boredom and more motivation to find or follow more action.
