A little about myself, I'm 15 years old and I was always fascinated with hunting dogs. My first dog was a Weimaraner so when he died, I decided to save my money. I bought my first gsp, Sonic, and so far I've taught him sit, down, jump, come, and wait. By 'wait' I mean, I throw a treat/food and say wait, he'll wait until I say go. The reason I started this post is because he doesn't seem to gain weight. He doesn't like Pedigree or any of the expensive canned food. It's starting to seem like I starve him because his ribs are visible. I've even resorted to table food to fatten him up, but nothing seems to work. I'd really look forward to some advice, thanks.

Welcome. How old is your dog?

I'm no expert, but here at some past discussions on putting weight on a GSP:

For helpful reviews of dog food, http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/. We feed Acana right now, our Brittany was skinny, but by gradually increasing it, she's put on the needed weight.

All of my shorthairs when they were young had a hard time keeping weight on. I am now feeding Purina Pro Performance which has a high fat and protein count and they are all doing well. I feed twice a day and with the evening meal I add a half a can of Wellness Core. I also supplement the evening meal with Shed Relief which has all the omegas and Kelp Help which also has nutrients. I use the kelp primarily to help the sun bleaching as I show my dogs. All that said I am currently having to feed my youngest female (2 years old) twice what I feed her 4 year old Uncle simply because she burns te calories faster. So my advice is to find a food that has a high protein and high fat number and feed that to your dog. You can then break that down into two or even three feedings a day. Your goal is to have only the last couple of ribs showing. You do not want to see any more and you do not want to see hip bones. For adding weight fast you can supplement the regular food with satin balls (just google satin balls recipes) or I can post my recipe if you are interested.

One dog does well on pro plan preformance, the other does not keep weight on no matter how much I feed.
We switched to Nutro High Endurance and have added Diamond Hi energy - a 50/50 mix. One dog gets 3 cups, the other 4.
The weight is sticking and he looks good.
