Subject: Scabby ears

 Hi! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Quick question: Stella has scabs on the borders of her ears (one worse than the other) and she's losing hair when the scabs are scratched off. The vet didn't seem to worried, but it seems to be increasing. I've cleaned her ears several times in the past 2 weeks. No changes in food, bedding or shampoo. Maybe it is the cold weather? Or just due to her scratching and is nothing to worry about.

My first thought was to ask if you are in a cold climate. Up here, everything gets really dry in the winter, and dogs have all the same issues. I have witnessed a lot of ear injuries up here in the winter (even just normal dog play can result in a ripped or torn ear) because of the dryness. Adding olive oil to Bella's dinner helped last winter to keep her coat nice and moisturized (we still do it, but currently replaced it with a salmon oil). Maybe a little vitamin E on the ear edges until they soften back up again.

We are in Florida. So, cold here is 60! Lol. I will try some olive oil and bathe her this weekend to start fresh. I read about mites, but visually I do not see any evidence and she has flea protector on right now.

Does she get a lot of baths? That can dry them out too. For you, it could be the opposite of us where dryness is prolonged cold, but for you it could be prolonged heat? I really don't know lol. Is there a smell out of the ordinary from her ears? Is she scratching them and bothered by them?

I was just gonna say do not over bath... it can be very drying....

She doesn't get bathed often. Maybe every few months unless she goes to the dog park - which isn't often. She is bothered by her ears. I called the vet and picked up some antibiotic cream to try for a few days to see if it makes a difference.

Our GSP had scabs and loss of hair along the edges of his ears when we first got him. A change in food seemed to resolve it, his ears have been great since.

Thank you! I've been curious about changing her food as she seems very itchy, but when I inquire I hear her food is superior (Acana). Maybe just a different mix.
