I tried searching but my search kept timing out.

Just recently my 9 month old Jackson has started to lift his leg and pee little bits to mark his spot. Ususally he doesn't even lift his leg to pee but he has seen other dogs lifting and marking which he has started to do. I figured it wasn't a big deal if he was doing that outside but its been a few times now he has lifted his leg inside a friends house and peed a little on plants and once on a table leg.

Both times that I have seen it i have yelled during the action and grabbed him and taken him outside and told him to pee. I also started trying to stop/correct him when he is "marking" even outside as I don't want him to think its okay/normal and do it inside.

Is this somthing that all dogs try to do or somthing I should try to correct a differnt way? He also isn't nuetered yet as our breeder said to wait till 18 months and my girlfriend thinks that neuturing him will fix everything.

Help!
Thanks!

Ya, I find the search funtion does not work. A google search works, try the topic you are looking for, followed by shorthairs.net, eg "marking shorthairs.net". Here are some older posts:

I don't know that neutering will fix it... my male was neutered at 6 months and he marks everything outside all day long... but he has never even attempted to do it inside, so I have no idea how to go about correcting it... I would think a loud "ah-ah!" and putting him outside is along the right track for correction...

First, both males and females mark, and neutering or spaying will not fix the problem. What I did with my male was when he started this phase whenever we went anywhere I kept him on leash and anticipated him and tried to catch him before he marked. I would give him gentle pop of the leash and an unh-uh. I would then take him outside to pee and would praise him when he potties in an appropriate place. It didn't take very long before he caught on. That said I still watch him when we go to a new house just in case. At home I never had a problem. Also, I typically do not correct outside marking unless it is like a patio or kids playground equipment, etc. I also correct peeing on cars. Good luck and if you are consistent this phase will be short lived.

I will second girls mark too! I think they are more obsessed about it... at least outside and going right on top of where another dog just went!

My dog marks - he's a rescue and was neutered at about 10 wks old - he didn't mark until he was 2 but loves to mark ever since.
He, fortunately, has never shown any interest in marking inside. I do restrict what he marks outside.
