That's what i've been wondering too  I get the impression it may be a case of  being stolen "to order" as there's more people than ever desperate for cash at this time of year, and particularly this year. Dont know about you guys over the pond but there's been a marked rise in shoplifting (particularly food from supermarkets ) over here this year as xmas approaches - a lot of desperate people out there  I really feel for those who are in that position, but they're stealing family members when they steal dogs in many cases
