Hi Everyone

My 11 month old neutered male gsp has recently started to develop extra dark specs on his coat, which are much darker than his coat thus far.

I am in Melbourne Australia and we are now going into the hot summer season so i thought it may be a summer coat and /or he's just getting darker gradually and this is how it happens?

Hes a pretty rough player down at the beach with other dogs and theres always plenty of friendly bites so ive also thought perhaps its as a result of the little bites and nips etc ?

The worst ive thought is that it could be mange, or the start of mange, but his coat and skin are in top condition overall.

He has had some inflammation on his belly and around the underams and groin areas but they cleared up with some basic treatment, and that was over a month ago.

Any pointers or ideas or information about natural gsp coat development or anything would be alot of help

I took pictures of Bo for this post but dont seem to be able to attach any

Hi Bojangles! We have a Bo too!

I have found anywhere the dogs have had a cut the hair grows in differently. As well, Bo accidentally got burnt a few years ago on his back, and the hair that grew back there was darker and grows in a different pattern than the rest of his hair.

I'm not really sure what to say in your case.

(BTW -- in order to post pictures, you have to have them saved somewhere else on line. Then you can just add the pictures using the buttons in the add reply box.)

Hi Bojangles. I'm not sure if this could be something different, but we found this past Summer that Bella has seasonal allergies. As a result, she would get small bead sized bumps on her head and snout. As those cleared, she would lose just a little bit of hair there and the new growth hair would come what appeared darker, because her coat was lightening in the sun. I recently just posted about sun bleaching as I am now trying to get ride of the sunbleached hair. I purchased a shedding block that is used for horses and used it twice now in one day and there was a drastic difference. So, it could be that his main coat is getting a slight bit lighter and new hair growing in is coming in fresh and dark.

It is more than likely his coat darkening as he grows up. He is about the tight age to really star noticing the change, and depending on his coat marking and color it can be more noticeable.

If you go back to the general discussion list the second post will tell you how to post pictures.

Thanks for the replies, and also I've sorted the pictures situation out so please take a look. I'm a bit less concerned now and hope its just his coat maturing and or new hair growth as everbell mentioned

Now to sort my avatar out and get a picture of Bo up on the site

Looks like maybe new coat coming in. He definitely has some sun bleaching so new hair will be darker. I have never seen it come in in spots though.

Bella's looked very similar due to the situation I mentioned. My guess is since your pup plays rough like you mentioned, he loosing little tufts of hair (not enough to be noticeable) but the darker is the new growth. The shedding block may help even the coloring out a little faster as it will remove that dead sun bleached hair. Also, if there was inflammation on his tummy you may have an allergy on your hands too.
