Marley, the GSP mix I have been trialing for a week, is a wonderful dog. I love him. But the rescue said he was 2-3 years old and it turns out he is less than one year old. I am single, work full-time and more, do not have the time to work with a puppy, which is why I had been looking for a young adult dog. I never would have knowingly adopted such a young dog. I am deely disappointed, but I think Marley will do better with someone who can be home more often, and who has space for him to run or play with other dogs a few times per day. Sadly, I can't offer that. I will keep him until they can find a more appropriate home. I am very disappointed with the rescue I worked with. Basic information and the assessment they provided about Marley proved inaccurate at best.
He is a wonderful dog with a lot of potential (he made a lot of progress with me in the last week) and he will make someone very happy indeed. If you are anywhere near Estes Park, Colorado and want to know about him, let me know. I'd love to help him find a perfect home.
I've only had him for a week, but I am really going to miss him!
Don't worry, I will consider carefully if I ever decide to try another dog. To be fair to me, I was assured I was adopting an older, housebroken, crate trained, cat friendly dog. And he was none of those things. I am an incredibly responsible person and would not have taken him on had I known any of that (I know myself and my limitations well!). It was not a fair test for either of us. Marley will be just fine... I will be very sad. I hope his new family will send me updates on occasion!
For the near future, I will borrow and play with friend's dogs, which might be the best solution!
Don't give up on finding a GSP. There are adult ,calm ,cat loving, crate trained GSP's that can be found through A GSP rescue that you could take into your office with you. Keep checking out different ones. Breeders often sell 1 to 5 year olds and you could be assured of thier age and that they would be well trained.. The down side of having a GSP is they are by nature prey driven . So far I'm 2 for 2 with over intrest in cats. If a cat is in the area everything else dissappers.
I don't know how much effect an owner has on the calmness of One. I have always been super animated with both my pups . Hanna is times 10 when shes 'ON" but very calm when shes Off. Shes alot of work right now.
I take Hanna to work with me but she has to be on a leash. She likes to play with other dogs and will go right up to a house and bark at the door. I try to take her to the dog Park for frisbee catching befor work and then after work she gets to pay with the dogs at the park. It takes a while to find a routine.
I hope you can find one you can take to the office with you. Dogs can be a blessing in the work place. And you sound like you have so much to offer one.
